The Phoenix Suns’ season is falling apart, piece by piece. They kicked off the 2024-25 run with fire, but that spark burned out fast. First, Coach Bud benched Bradley Beal and Jusuf Nurkić, and the chaos began. Then, Mat Ishbia swung big for Jimmy Butler—but missed. Even Kevin Durant, despite the trade buzz and the Warriors’ move, stayed stuck. Now, fresh trouble is brewing, and it’s not looking pretty.
A new set of conversations has entered the NBA scenes. Forbes’ Evan Sidery tweeted: “Thanks to the Suns, the Rockets currently have a 7.1% chance of landing a top-four pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Houston also holds a 1.5% chance of landing Cooper Flagg, and Phoenix has the toughest schedule remaining.” What does this mean?
The Rockets might be winning on the court, but their eyes are on the Suns’ downfall. Thanks to the 2023 trades involving Kevin Durant and James Harden, Houston holds swap rights for Phoenix’s 1st-round pick. If the 11th-seed Suns keep sliding with the toughest schedule left, their lottery odds jump. And if luck hits, the 4th-seed Rockets could steal a top-four pick (7.1% chance) or even land the #1 draft prospect and Duke prodigy Cooper Flagg (1.5% chance). Thus, for Houston, every Suns loss is a golden opportunity.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on NBA Countdown that there is a possibility that Kevin Durant and the Suns would work together on any potential trade to a contender in a trade scenario. This could simply mean that the 2024-25 NBA season would be KD’s last in the Suns jersey. Next season onwards, the 36-year-old will wear a new one and continue in the league.
Charania said, “Durant was blindsided when he was involved in trade conversations. But this off-season, from my understanding, what it would look like is Durant and the Suns would work together on any potential trade to a contender in a trade scenario. I would expect four to six contending teams to have some serious involvement with Durant.”
Kevin Durant survived the February trade buzz, but this summer could be a different story. With the Suns sitting at 28-33 and falling fast, changes feel inevitable. Bradley Beal‘s massive contract—and no-trade clause—ties their hands, while Devin Booker remains the franchise star. It leaves Durant as the only real trade chip if Phoenix wants to shake things up.

Are the Suns doomed without a major shakeup, or can they still salvage their season?

Meanwhile, amid the mess, former Sun Isaiah Thomas couldn’t stay quiet, sharing his heartbreak over the team’s painful downfall.
Caught in a new Kevin Durant-Cooper Flagg storm, the Suns’ front office gets a strong message from ex-player
The 36-year-old point guard Isaiah Thomas played for the Phoenix Suns in 2024. But in 2025, the team sent him to play for the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G League. Someone who has been around the NBA for 14 years, Thomas knows when things start going downhill for any team. Thus, in his heartfelt message, which seems more like a major blast on the Suns’ front office, the G League hoopster tweeted twice:
“Suns are so disconnected… They needed to make a move at the deadline to bring in new energy.” He said in his first tweet. Surely, there seems to be a mismatch in the team. Mike Budenholzer benched Beal in the hope that the ‘humiliation’ would push him to waive his no-trade clause. Didn’t happen.
Kevin Durant subtly expresses his discontent, even while masking the truth behind his claim: “I didn’t want to get traded mid-season.” Now, the rising tension between Devin Booker and Coach Bud takes center stage, making a new move feel inevitable.

The second tweet from Thomas said: “All that trade talk killed any good energy they had smh.” Hard reality, but yes. All the trade drama cost the Suns heavily this time. Their loud ambitions of signing Jimmy Butler for a $121 million, 2-year contract extension fell flat. Knowing too well that Bradley Beal’s special power could become an obstruction, Mat Ishbia was way too ambitious. And with Kevin Durant? Well, his disinterest in moving to his former team caused another set of troubles.

Thus, the Suns‘ season is crumbling, and the damage is spreading fast. With trade talks killing their rhythm and locker room tensions rising, the future looks shaky. Meanwhile, the Rockets quietly wait, hoping Phoenix’s collapse delivers them a golden draft ticket. And if Kevin Durant walks this summer, the Suns may lose their last real chance to stay competitive. For now, chaos reigns—and the clock is ticking.
