At this point, it has become clear that building a Super Team in the NBA bears a huge cost. With the introduction of the second apron of luxury tax, most teams are making sure that they don’t cross that threshold, as it leads to serious penalties. Well, the Phoenix Suns are not most teams. Way past the $188.9 million cap, Mat Ishbia is trying to work his way around the financial restrictions to solve the problem that Kevin Durant faced last season. And his latest move plus NBA legend Kevin Garnett’s advice could be the answer to all his problems.

With their season ending sooner than expected with a humiliating first round sweep, reports emerged that KD was not pleased with the way the Suns ran their offense. Despite having superstar teammates like Booker and Beal, Durant never felt comfortable in his role and believed that he was being underutilized, spending a lot of his time playing on the corner. While KD is still very much a part of the roster, the Suns front office have begun making moves to rectify last season’s error. After trading forward David Roddy to the Hawks in exchange for EJ Liddell, the Suns further plan on releasing their latest acquisition to open up a roster spot, likely for a point guard.

But Ishbia already owes over $400 million in salary plus taxes for next season, going miles past the second apron limit, which heavily restricts the moves he can make to fill that void. So, they are likely to add a primary ball handler who can run their offense on a veteran minimum contract to fill that vacant roster spot once they release Liddell. Surely, that move will solve KD’s problem, giving them a more versatile offense which can operate on Durant’s strengths. But who can the Suns sign at such a low budget? Well, former NBA Champ Kevin Garnett knows exactly who.

Will Mat Ishbia take Kevin Garnett’s advice?

During a January episode of KG Certified, Garnett revealed exactly what the Suns need to become title contenders, “They need a point guard, bro. That’s why that sh*t look like that, bro. They need a real point guard.” While Beal and Booker occasionally filled that role last season, they are not natural floor generals. So, KG suggested the Suns to pursue free agent Tyus Jones, who has already done wonders in Memphis and Washington with his playmaking ability, “You know who Phoenix need to go get? Tyus Jones. In Washington. And then I thought about… Start? Start? Start? What? That motherf****r other than Halliburton, he is prolific when it comes to being effective and taking care of the ball.”

Averaging 12 points in Washington last season, Jones was the Wizards’ primary ball handler and proved extremely effective in that role with career high 7.3 assists. Moreover, even Suns GM James Jones revealed that they need a true point guard to improve, “I think the team could benefit from having a point guard.” But more importantly, Jones is currently a free agent, and it is believed that he is ready to sign a veteran minimum contract on his new team. So, he might be the perfect candidate for the Suns as he fits all their needs under the set budget. However, there have been murmurs about Tyus looking to sign with one of his former teams in Minnesota or Memphis. And that could end all hopes for Mat Ishbia.
