Can the Suns survive without Durant, or is their season already slipping away?

First home loss for the Phoenix Suns. End of their winning streak. Kevin Durant is out for 2 weeks. Can it get any worse? The Kings beat the Suns in overtime to ground them after their dreamy 7-win streak. Sac Town handed Phoenix a chance to win when they fouled on an inbound pass, allowing Devin Booker to tie the game with a free throw. With only 3.9 seconds left, the Suns retained possession.

Booker had a solid chance to win it with a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer, but the ball rimmed out. It’s one of those moments where a game can slip away from you just like that. And it wasn’t just me who said that the Suns’ 6-foot-6 guard was looking gassed. It was expected given his return from illness, that he just wanted to step up in the absence of KD. Was he bad in the game?

Nope.

In his 43 mins of game time, he scored 23 points, 12 assists, and a rebound. Not bad at all. But Mike Budenholzer is now in a tricky position with the 4x NBA All-Star. Devin Booker and Bradley Beal have the added responsibility of taking care of scoring. But they have been dealing with their own set of injuries. After the game, speaking to the media, Budenholzer said, “Yeah, I think he’s had a tough couple of days. I’ve gotta find a way to give him a break, get him his rest even when he’s healthy, and keep him ready to finish. But he’s a fighter, he’s a competitor. He wants to play every minute.”

The Phoenix Suns’ big three could only play 18 consecutive games together last season. This season things don’t look good as well. Will coach Mike Budenholzer risk Devin Booker to get the win, though?

When can we see Kevin Durant back in action?

Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Suns forward Kevin Durant will undergo a reevaluation in two weeks after suffering a left calf strain on Friday. In the Suns’ 114-113 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, the Slim Reaper played 37 minutes. He had been outstanding during the team’s hot 8-1 start, averaging 27.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. The veteran was also shooting 55.3% from the field and 42.9% from three. Phoenix’s leading scorer, Durant, re-entered the Mavs game with 7:39 left in the fourth.

He didn’t share anything before going back in,” Budenholzer said. “(Durant) was able to finish the game. There was no awareness from us. Credit to him for finishing and finding a way to help us win that game.

The biggest concern is that Kevin Durant’s current calf injury is the same one that he strained before the summer, playing for Team USA in Paris. While it didn’t affect his performance during the Olympics, pre-season, or the start of the NBA season, we can only hope he handles it the same way again. Here’s to hoping he powers through just like before! So for two weeks, for sure, we don’t see KD suiting up for the Suns. And beyond that, we can’t say for sure.

The only benefactor in this situation has been their rookie, Ryan Dunn. He stepped in for the injured Kevin Durant and made his third career start on Sunday against the Kings. Before this, Dunn also started twice when Beal was sidelined with a sprained right elbow.
