Despite $515M earnings, Joel Embiid still lags behind Paul George—Is he overrated?

The Process is here to stay. The Philadelphia 76ers have had an extensive offseason. Their latest move guarantees a core that sticks together for years to come. Joel Embiid has decided he will decline his player option for the next season and instead has signed a $192.9 million extension with his draft club. In doing so, he joins an elusive group of only five players that includes his new teammate Paul George.

As part of the extension, Embiid will hold a player option for the 2028-29 season. It keeps him in Philly till the age of 33 at least. The new deal also boosts his guaranteed money to $299 million, a feat that will help him become only the fifth player to earn over $500 million in career earnings. Other members of the group are LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and George. The $515 million puts him above KD but falls just $4 million short of his Sixers mate.

While speaking to ESPN about his extension, Embiid admitted to considering the city as his “home”. His desire for a championship is linear. He only wants to win in Philly. Furthermore, he also wishes to finish ‘The Process’ in The City of Brotherly Love.

“Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career. “I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we’re just getting started!” he wrote on his Instagram.

The most important part of the process begins for Joel Embiid and the Sixers

Embiid’s extension helps understand the feelings within the 76ers office. Their trust in the newly formed core is immense. Looking at the range of weapons and the versatility the roster holds, even Tyrese Maxey couldn’t contain his excitement. “The fit is crazy if you think about it” he told George on his podcast. On paper, they have arguably the most fearsome big, a skilled two-way wing, and an All-Star level guard as their leading forces.

Down the line, the likes of Kelly Oubre Jr., Eric Gordon, and Caleb Martin provide a firm base to bring an impeccable balance to the team. However, this has happened before in Philly. They had Jimmy Butler and Ben Simmons besides Embiid, a ‘Big 3’ that covered every base. At the end, it all comes down to the synergy the team can develop.

The challenge is going to be incorporating George into the mix. As a forward, PG13 can operate swiftly off the ball, but will still require his space to get into a rhythm. Maxey might have to become the fulcrum connecting every piece. And then Embiid is the 280-pound monster that is capable of putting up ludicrous numbers on a nightly basis.

There will have to be many sacrifices and adjustments to create a systematic formation. Luckily, as a veteran with experience in every role, Paul George mingles brilliantly with a star cast. At 34, even though a highly productive component, he will likely take a back seat from scoring the ball.

During his introductory conference, he relayed his aims of revitalizing his defensive game. “I know what I’m out there to do. That’s ultimately put the ball in the basket and try to guard the best player on the other team,” he said. His grounded nature will be paramount for the Sixers to succeed.

Expect a spaced-out offense that can attack from any part of the floor. They have the ideal supporting pillars that can help enunciate the final product. The Sixers have pressurizing defenders, protectors, and floor spacers, the ingredients for modern-day basketball success. It all comes down to execution.

The next four to five years in Philadelphia will be focused on a singular aim – to finally bring a championship.
