Standing at Six Feet two inches, Stephen Curry is about four inches shorter than an average NBA player. But it hasn’t deterred him from building a towering resume. He wasn’t heavily recruited after he finished his high school. But ever since he made that record-breaking 2008 NCAA run for Davidson, he didn’t look back. Even after that, he was picked seventh in the 2009 NBA draft, below Jonny Flynn and Hasheem Thabeet. But since then, he has achieved glory that hasn’t belonged to more than 90% of NBA players.
One of his biggest cheerleaders, Sonya Curry, reveals her thoughts as Stephen Curry: Underrated, a documentary about her kid, comes out.

The scintillating guard has made sure that each hurdle motivates him further. His mother, Sonya Curry has seen it all since he was a kid. When her son was in Davidson, she had already seen glimpses of greatness. When he helped Davidson erase a 17-point lead against elite Georgetown, as per Sports Illustrated, she had exclaimed, “We’d heard so much about how he needed to be bigger. But then he made those shots and looked at me, and I thought, what in the world is going on?”
Ever since then, things have only taken further flight for the Golden State Warriors guard. With a bunch of championships, MVP titles, and shooting style that has changed the game, her son has kept outdoing the expectations placed upon him. Therefore, this latest documentary on him by Apple TV crossing the $3 trillion mark in the market cap, is not a surprise.
And mother Sonya is beaming again after 15 years with pride as her cherub once again received his stars. During the Sundance Premier of the Steph docu, she shared her thoughts.
Being a part of the whole process, she was excited and said, “People expected you to look a certain way and to do certain things, and he has created his own way. He’s persevered, he’s committed to being intentional about where he wanted to be with his life and what he wanted to do with basketball. Then off the court, the same thing. Just as a father, as a husband. So I’m just excited and just blessed to know my son is going to have an impact like he’s going to have with this movie.”
Truly, Steph’s impact is beyond the court and that’s why he gets acknowledged by someone as huge as Drake.
