The In Season semifinal clash between the New Orleans Pelicans and the Los Angeles Lakers laid bare the Pelicans’ vulnerabilities in every aspect. The Lakers secured a dominant 34-point victory. None of the Pelicans reached the 15-point mark. The stark outcome underscored the team’s evident lack of mental resilience and teamwork. Additionally, it emphasized the crucial role of leadership, particularly from Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, in high-stakes games.

Brandon Ingram struggled to hit double digits, managing only 9 points from 4-13 shots. In a slightly improved but still lackluster performance, Zion Williamson scored 13 points in 26 minutes. The individual struggles of these key players reflected the broader challenges the Pelicans faced in maintaining a competitive edge throughout the game.

In addressing the disappointing loss from the in-season semifinals, Coach Willie Green emphasized the need for accountability, not sparing the 23-year-old star Zion Williamson of due blame. Initially offering advice to the young player, he urged, “Stay the course. Keep working. Keep knocking the dominoes down, one at a time.”

When mentioning the game’s shortcomings, especially in terms of effort, Green pointed, “But as far as the game [semifinals], our efforts wasn’t there. I mentioned that in my press conference. That’s across the board, Z [Zion] included.”

The game’s loss wasn’t solely due to Zion Williamson’s laid-back approach. It was a collective failure. Nevertheless, Zion has consistently shown a commitment to elevating his game. Initially hailed as the next LeBron James, he has expressed a desire to emulate James’s work ethic. Despite this, the results have yet to win over the fans.

Zion needs to start taking command

Zion’s ongoing struggle with fitness and energy remains a persistent issue. Back in his college days, he garnered national attention for his sneaky athleticism. Even though he was leaner than his current physique, he was by no means ripped. A less bulky Zion took over the college basketball world, becoming one of the most hyped draft prospects in recent years.

Regardless, through the current season, it appears that his body is influencing his mindset more than the other way around. Despite being under a lucrative five-year $200+ million contract, Zion is not on a trajectory to justify the superstar-level paycheck he’s receiving.

During the semifinal, Zion’s casual approach, and lapses on defense, were glaringly evident. At various points, it seemed like he was disinterested in playing the game altogether. While Zion’s statistics for the season may be decent, considering his caliber and contract, they merely fulfill the basic expectations. The gap between his potential and the actual impact he’s making on the court is a growing concern for the Pelicans and their fans.
