With Paul George (PG) joining the MVP and company, the Sixers look like one of the strongest teams in the East. Of course, the squad is more balanced with PG’s addition. The nine-time All-Star will be playing alongside Embiid and a talented scorer, Tyrese Maxey. It all seems perfect when you also include Kelly Oubre in the starting lineup. The Sixers were quite close to beating the Knicks, but couldn’t hold off New York’s intensive scoring. However, Philly is now on the other side of the fence. They now have three of the most elite scorers of the league on their roster. But then again, this is not the first time Paul George has joined a team that becomes the headline in the offseason.
George was traded to the Thunder back in 2017, teaming up with Carmelo Anthony and Russell Westbrook (Brodie). He had a great run in Oklahoma, but couldn’t find success in the playoffs. Then in 2019, he joined the Clippers in a huge trade deal, joining forces with Kawhi Leonard. In each of these moves, the said team quickly became a huge threat and George was the headline. The Sixers on the other hand have exhausted many options around their longtime center, as they introduce another star player. Now, there are a lot of expectations from Philly considering how desperate they have been in the past few years.
But the franchise may not win a title right away. The reason for the same may have to do with PG’s past. Brian Windhorst was not as optimistic about George’s addition. “This is now the fourth time you could say that he was a leading headline in the offseason. The previous three have led to what? And that’s my point. I’m not sure, I certainly recognize that the 76ers are a formidable team. I think they’re gonna need a year. I’m not gonna put a lot of pressure on them to win this year… But historically we see teams, when they hollow out their roster to create a big three, they always need more time to backfill that roster.”, said Windhorst. While PG has a history of playing with new teams and making them a squad to look out for, could this be different with the Sixers?

Following his stint with the Pacers, George’s best run was back in the 2020-21 season. He led the Clippers to a Conference Finals appearance without Leonard and was quite impactful that year. As Windhorst said, teams take their time settling with their star player. However, this time, he is heading back to the East and things may be different. In the past few years, the East has come up to be competitive. Teams like the Celtics and the Heat have been the top performers. Comparing these rosters to the newly formed Sixers, it is safe to say that they may struggle to get past them in a seven-game series. But how tough can the Sixers be?
Will the Sixers finally win a title with Paul George on the roster?
The star power and the amount of talent on the team is pretty intense. But at the same time, there cannot be massive changes in performance with a star’s addition in just one year. Yes, the Warriors won back-to-back titles after Kevin Durant joined, but they were already the title contenders. Whereas the Sixers showed great potential this postseason, especially Maxey. Tyrese is one of the players Philly looks forward to having in the long run. Embiid continues to dominate and maintain his MVP caliber. Along with that, they have someone like Oubre Jr. who is quite energetic on both ends of the floor.

Have an interesting take?
All this combined with PG’s addition sounds alarming for the East. But it will still be their first season together. This team is definitely capable of winning a title, but not so quickly. It will be interesting to see Paul George and Embiid pair up with Maxey being the guard to facilitate the offense. What are your thoughts on the Sixers?
