The astonishing feats of LeBron James continue to grow. Playing for the first time in his 40s, instead of showing some decline, when playing the Dallas Mavericks he brought back the vintage. Colliding with Dereck Lively II, a sophomore, the King switched hands to finish a bewildering dunk. The arena went crazy for all the right reasons and so did the others around the NBA. “He banged on someone at 40! We can’t say that wasn’t dope,” said Kevin Garnett, a former rival to James.

He was one of the many with their jaws on the floor. Even Paul George, the 76ers’ prolific forward couldn’t prepare himself. “Let’s throw this out there. It was very impressive. I did not see that coming I’m not going to lie,” said George. However, a lot of people were caught by surprise due to James finishing with his ‘weak hand’. Hence, PG13 took it upon himself to clear the misconception.

“Bron is still gifted even at 40. He is still athletically gifted. And we got to like he’s left-handed. Let’s throw it out there. He’s actually left-handed but he shoots right-handed,” he revealed on his podcast.

Nonetheless, everything about that dunk – hang time, hand-switching, and finishing over someone almost half his age was theatric, wasn’t it? The only drawback is that it happened during arguably the Lakers’ biggest upset of the season. The Mavericks, minus Doncic and Irving blew out the healthy Purple and Gold. It did affect the popularity of the dunk a little bit.

Still, George felt safe to open up the conversation about the two most talked about basketball players. He fielded the argument for Michael Jordan having an edge for his scoring accomplishments at a similar age. But as far as making it looks spotless, he gives the edge to James. “I don’t know what to compare that to from a 40 year mark from who did some shit at 40. I know MJ going for 50 at 40 is pretty impressive. But for one play that’s got to be up there for sure,” said Paul George.

But even with that, what LeBron James did after having 22 years of high-intensity basketball behind him remains unfathomable.

Can anyone in the NBA today match LeBron's blend of size, skill, and longevity?

Have an interesting take?

Such moments from LeBron James open up a floodgate of conversations. The most prominent of thoughts is whether there could be another LeBron James. The next generation of NBA has some freakish talents. The likes of Wembanyama, Luka Doncic, Ja Morant, and more have begun their takeover.

However, mimicking what James has been able to do is a rare feat in itself. The Akron Hammer started at just 18, is still playing at the topmost level and his output has barely waned. Couple all of that with him being a force of nature at the age of 40, and Paul George believes there can never be a player with the prototype of his former arch-rival.

“No. We might see someone athletic. But not at 6’9″, 270. I don’t know what Bron is. We are not going to see nobody at that size with that athleticism. We might see some athleticism. There’s guys that can jump and do some crazy things. Yeah, not with all of that bro. Hell no,” George said on his podcast.

And in hindsight, it would take someone to replicate James’ path intricately even to stand a chance at being close. Physically, there are few with the combination of strength and explosiveness at his size. But more important is the consistency that ‘King’ has been able to sustain throughout his 22-year career.

As things stand, there might not be another LeBron James in the near future. But it’s unwise to say never in the world of sports where the possibilities are endless.
