What was Anthony Edwards thinking? Does he really think no one aside from Michael Jordan had the skills in the previous era? Perspective or not, that was bold enough to discredit players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and many more icons of the game. Magic who often indulges in celebrating the success of today’s athletes was so offended (understandably so) by it that he even went on record to say he doesn’t talk to players with no rings. Ouch! Not many active players chimed in on the debate, but Paul George made the exception to discuss the comments of the so-called second coming of Michael Jordan.
PG, a massive Dr J fan, grew up in the era of Jordan. As a result, his assessment of the 90s game can’t be off the mark. Podcast P with Paul George was the place to discuss this further. And the Sixer poured his thoughts on the controversial Anthony Edwards statement.
While discussing the issue with Paul George Sr., a guest on the latest episode on the pod, the 33-year-old said, “Anthony Edwards is super talented. And is a huge talent going forward. But just how much the game has grown and how far, like, you gotta pay dues to those dudes that did it before us.” He further delved into how MJ was different from the guys in that era with his athleticism and movement, something very similar we see in the NBA today.

“So I think that was kinda where Anthony Edwards, you’re young, you don’t really necessarily know how to articulate that or maybe he should’ve fully explained what he was trying to say,” George further added. “I’m putting words in his mouth at this point, but I’m thinking that’s what he was trying to go towards.”
According to Paul George, Edwards’ immaturity was due to his age and the lack of explanation of his words. If that’s really the actual reason, then Edwards could be left off the hook. But this wasn’t the first time the Timberwolves guard prompted PG to respond after his outlandish comments.

Paul George responded to it by calling out the 22-year-old. During an episode of his podcast, PG reminded Ant that all of them will get old someday so he better choose his words carefully. “I mean, we are old. But we all gon get old. Anthony Edwards be careful what you wish for,” PG said. He also acknowledged that KD is Ant’s favorite player, so that was only a moment of respect between the two. “But I think it’s more sort of giving flowers, and I think he gave the flowers.”
Anthony Edwards is on his way to greatness and soon will be the face of the league. Edwards probably needs a championship to strike up a proper conversation with Magic Johnson and the legends of yesteryear.
