Is Stephen A. Smith really a 'pathological liar,' or is this just another baseless accusation?

Agree or not, Stephen A. Smith is on top of the sports media food chain. Some may not buy his words, but ultimately, the 56-year-olds words carry some value. While the sports fans and athletes put up with his opinions for all these years, finally a voice has burst forth to call him out. And, it’s none other than ESPN’s former employee, Jason Whitlock. In the latest rant, Whitlock not only called Smith a “liar” but also dragged NFL legend Cris Carter into the controversy.

Importantly, Whitlock didn’t just go after Smith out of the blue. While the duo has had back and forth consistently, it blew up earlier this year. A month after the veteran analyst released his autobiography ‘Straight Shooter’, the Fox Sports analyst made a controversial statement. He said, “Stephen A. Smith is low character. He’s a pathological liar,” skimming through Smith’s supposed college basketball career in February 2024.

Whitlock not only suspected Smith’s college record but also raised questions regarding the analyst’s exaggerated tone in his reporting. Months after the brutal dig, he has come up with another unforgiving critique.

Stephen A. Smith can’t be trusted, says Jason Whitlock

In a recent episode of Fearless with Jason Whitlock, the veteran played a clip of Stephen A. Smith’s feature in Fully Loaded show alongside Cris Carter. In the video, Smith can be talking about a “code” that he follows as a journalist. Moreover, to explain the code, Smith came up with a hypothetical situation. The ESPN analyst said, “For example, I saw a cat and he was cheating on his woman or she was cheating on her man or whatever and I covered them. Man, I ain’t got nothing to say, ain’t none of my damn business.”

Following that, Smith proceeded to take a dig at other writers who lacked the “code” and in the meantime, Carter agreed to it without any hesitation. And this is where Whitlock comes into the picture.

He paused the video and proceeded to his rant. The 57-year-old said, “He baits people into idiocy. Cris Carter you could hear his voice,  you know seconding Stephen… Chris Carter is actually smarter than this, but he’s following Stephen A Smith down the path of idiocy.”

The Fox Sports analyst proceeded to dismantle Smith’s methods. Whitlock argued that the veteran pretended as if the other sports journalist lacked “his ethics”“his street knowledge” and proceeded to cover the athlete’s personal life. However, Whitlock quickly clarified that he hadn’t seen a journalist carry out such a business in his 30-year-old career.

After decoding the supposed lie in Smith’s words, the Fox Sports veteran proceeded to call out the Hall of Fame athletes who worked alongside Smith. He continued, “Everybody knows little goofballs like Stephen A Smith, who are pathological liars. And he sits around with Hall of Fame football player Cris Carter, Hall of Fame football player Shannon Sharpe.”

He further continued, “They follow him into a conversation of idiocy. And trust me, they know exactly who Stephen A Smith.” Moreover, Whitlock didn’t stop there. He proceeded to call Smith a “wannabe” lying about his college career. Smith is yet to respond to the accusation, but recently, he got trolled when the New Orleans Pelicans dropped his college stats where he averaged only 1.5 points per game.
