Is the Curry family the new gold standard for balancing sports and business success?

“Ageing like a fine wine!” That’s certainly something fans can say about Steph Curry. But in case you thought he was the only wine in the Curry household, think again. We can refrain from commenting on Ayesha Curry in the same way, but her wine brand can be easily discussed. Ayesha and Sydel, Curry’s sister, launched a Cabernet Sauvignon brand Domain Curry in 2018. Despite selling it in 2023, Ayesha holds creative control along with Sydel. Earlier this year, they introduced Sauvignon Blanc, a wine line of the brand, so it was only fitting for sister Curry to taste the first grapes of 2024.

In an IG story, Sydel shared a video of her in Napa Valley, tasting the first grapes of the year. Sydel captioned it, “Sauvignon Blanc grapes fresh off the vines and so so delicious. @ayeshacurry look at our babies.” Ayesha, who’s on vacation, was missing in the video to see the harvesting herself. When the Curry family sat over for dinner in 2015, the idea first popped up to have the beverage company. That idea materialized in 2018 as Ayesha and Sydel took a step further to reach their goal of honoring and celebrating the strong women in the Curry family.

Their partnership with The Prisoner Wine Company even transcended the boundaries of the family as it aims to impact the community as a whole. Constellation Brands’ commitment to invest $100 million in Black and minority-owned businesses by 2030 is something the Curry family always looks to do, and that’s to make a difference. So seeing the first harvest of the year was a fulfilling moment for Sydel as it keeps her driving to the aim she came together with Ayesha for. But Steph Curry and his family can’t take the best oenophiles title so easily as they have some competition from on-court rivals as well.

NBA and wine – a match that is making millions

When talking about the NBA and wine, the first name that comes to mind is Gregg Popovich. The San Antonio Spurs HC is known for his taste in vintage wines with a collection that can put seasoned wine collectors to shame. While he doesn’t care about making a profit off of it, there are quite several NBA stars who are making deep pockets in the wine industry.

Without having France in a wine conversation, it never gets the proper flavor. Champagne Jeeper and Château La Mascaronne, two of Tony Parker’s crowned jewels in the beverage business already have a solid market hold. To enhance that further, Château La Mascaronne Côtes de Provence Rosé came to the market in 2021, a bottle of which can be purchased for $23. Another NBA legend, Dwyane Wade, has also caressed his fingers through some ripe grapes as he is involved in the production of Wade Cellars and Three by Wade wines.

Have an interesting take?

“I got into this industry not knowing a lot about the wine world. I wanted my brand to be very accessible,” Wade said about his motivation for getting into the business. The wine label, California Chenin Blanc, priced at $20 certainly makes it accessible to all.

Channing Frye has also made a name for himself in the wine production with his Chosen Family Wines. Since 2023, the brand has expanded and is distributing on a wider level as opposed to its early days. And if you’re down with tasting some more wine, Carmelo Anthony has you covered. The former NY Knicks ace crafted his blend with VII(N) the Seventh Estate in 2022. The 2017 Oath of Fidelity Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the finest wine produced by the company and dowsing a few glasses of it won’t be a bad idea.

Steph Curry has very little involvement in his wife and sister’s joint wine venture, but he has his brand, the Gentleman’s Cut, launched in 2023. This should be enough to prove that the dunkers are not only action junkies but also have a fine taste in life’s delicacies.
