Just two years ago, the Kings were looking like West’s next rising team. With Mike Brown taking over as head coach, they ended their sixteen-year playoff drought and jumped back to NBA relevance. But things have only gone downhill since then. Mike Brown is fired. De’Aaron Fox is gone. And they are stuck at the ninth seed fighting for a spot in the playoffs. Sure enough, this ‘chaos’ has led to Domantas Sabonis doubting his future in Sacramento.

Latest report by The Athletic suggests that Sabonis is expected to seek clarity on the Kings’ direction this offseason. Well, he is only in the first year of his four-year $186 million contract and still has three more years and $140.3 million left on his deal. But that does not guarantee his stay with the Kings. “Just as Fox wanted to know whose voice mattered most on key decisions, and who the team’s owner might be trusting the most as counsel, Sabonis is known to have similar questions.” The Athletic reported.

Yes, De’Aaron Fox went through a similar situation following the firing of Mike Brown in December. While he wanted the Kings to stick with Brown because he was tired of playing under different coaches throughout his career, management decided to part ways with the former Coach of the Year following the team’s disappointing start to the season. And Fox clearly stated, “I’m not going to play for another coach. I’m going to play for another team.” He got traded to the Spurs soon after.

Well, the Kings have done a lot better since then, with Doug Christie taking over as the interim head coach. Shaking off the abysmal start, they are 19-11 under Doug. However, it is still unclear if the Kings will retain him after this season. An anonymous source close to a Kings player even questioned, “What is the vision here? It feels like it could be headed toward chaos.” Surely, that’s what Sabonis wants clarity on before he decides if he should continue with the Kings or look for a better situation. Moreover, he likely does not want to be caught off guard with a sudden trade news like the one Fox received in January.

Domantas Sabonis claims he had “No Idea” about De’Aaron Fox trade amid his Uncertain future

Following Fox’s trade to the Spurs, it became clear that no player is safe. After all, De’Aaron had been the face of the franchise for more than seven years and the Kings parted ways with him without notice. Even Sabonis was taken aback by the sudden move, “It’s just part of the business. Things happen that way. I had no idea. I was sleeping when this happened. I got woken up by the news.”

So, it is possible that Domantas wants to make sure that the Kings see a long-term future with him and have a plan about how they want to move ahead following Fox and Brown’s departure. Of course, the big man has been dominant since moving to Sacramento, averaging 19.5 points and over fourteen rebounds this season. But with him in the middle of his prime, Domantas needs assurance that his career is heading in the right direction with the Kings, potentially toward a championship. Otherwise, demanding a trade could be the next best move for the star Center. What are your thoughts?
