The New York Knicks have been one of the most popular and beloved franchises in the league. Their fans are some of the most vocal fan bases in the NBA. But, a recent uptick in performances in the past few seasons has rejuvenated the franchise, instilling hope and optimism among the fans for the future.

The New York Knicks have initiated a trade to acquire Toronto Raptors’ OG Anunoby and Precious Achiuwa. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Knicks have centered a package around RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and draft considerations. The trade has taken the NBA world by surprise, and even Immanuel Quickley has expressed his bewilderment through his X (formerly Twitter) handle. He wrote, “Oh my goodness….”

The trade for OG Anunoby is a clear indication that the Knicks are targeting a deep postseason run. Despite acquiring Anunoby and Achiuwa, the Knicks still have the cap space to acquire another star through free agency. Superstars like Donovan Mitchell, Zach LaVine, and Joel Embiid have been linked with the Knicks in the past. It remains to be seen whether the Knicks can capitalize on their advantageous position in the 2024 free agency.
The Knicks currently occupy the 7th spot in the Eastern Conference standings, having won 17 games and losing another 14 games. The addition of Anunoby and Achiuwa would surely help, but a dramatic improvement in performance isn’t expected. The Knicks have ambitions of an NBA title. However, they haven’t won a title since 1973, a whopping 51 years ago.

Can the Knicks finally win the NBA title?
The Knicks are situated in the so-called “big market”, which gives them a big advantage in attracting superstars. However, the Knicks have failed to bring a superstar to the “big apple” since Carmelo Anthony. Nevertheless, things might be about to change, as the Knicks’ hierarchy has assembled a side capable of competing for the title. The only missing piece in the puzzle is a superstar.

Jalen Brunson has led the Knicks admirably, but in order to compete for the championship, the team would require a true MVP-caliber player. As of now, the addition of Anunoby would help, but an NBA title still appears to be unlikely. Maybe the Knicks could win the elusive Larry O’Brien trophy next season when they inevitably acquire a superstar.
