Is San Antonio really a dead-end for NBA stars, or can Wembanyama change the narrative?

Following Victor Wembanyama’s dominant rookie season, there is no doubt that he is going to be one of the biggest superstars in the league. The only question now is: How soon? To attain that status, he will have to lead the Spurs to the playoffs and maybe even win a championship. And with the addition of Chris Paul, Wemby finally has the veteran leadership he and his teammates were lacking last season. However, former Bucks star Jeff Teague believes that despite the CP3 move, it will take a few years before The Alien gets his hands on the Larry O’Brien trophy because of ONE glaring concern.

When asked how long Wemby will likely take to win his first title, as it seems almost inevitable, Teague replied, “I ain’t gonna hold you, he’s going to. He got about year 7-8.” Yes, even LeBron James and Michael Jordan, as great as they were, had to wait nine and seven years respectively before they became champions. And Jeff believes Wemby’s timeline is going to be the same. However, his co-panelist was shocked by the response and asked, “Damn! Y’all don’t think Wemby gonna get it?”

Then, the former champion pointed out one major reason behind his response, “Man, that surrounding cast, boy that m———–r weak.” Although Vic was great from day one, averaging 21.4 points and over ten rebounds as a rookie, the Spurs finished as the 2nd-last seed in the West with only 22 wins. Sure, they have gotten better this season with the addition of Chris Paul, but Jeff Teague claimed, “Who they got over there? CP only went there coz he said he wanted to play.”

Then, he took a brutal dig at the franchise, “Don’t nobody wanna go to San Antonio.” While the Spurs have been a dynasty team for years with multiple championship wins during the Tim Duncan era, it has not been a very attractive destination for superstars and free agents. And that could mean trouble for Wemby, even though he’s at the center of this project, as he will surely need support to get the Spurs to the mountaintop as Jeff Teague remarked on The Club 520 Podcast. But things could change with CP3 on the roster.

Chris Paul hoping to instill a ‘competitive’ and ‘winning’ culture in San Antonio

During Wemby’s rookie season, he did not have any big-name stars by his side. But that will change this year with him joining forces with Chris Paul. Yes, CP is entering his 20th season and is no longer in his prime. But his experience and leadership might be enough to get them on the right track. When asked what he wants to accomplish with the team, his focus was clear, “I think the biggest thing that I hope I can bring to this team is the competitiveness. We talk about it all the time. Playing hard is a talent, but it’s not enough.”

“This team here has already shown the ability to play hard and to compete night in and night out, but now we’ve got to figure out how to translate that to wins.” Sure enough, Chris Paul did the same in Phoenix when he helped Devin Booker and Co. end their ten-year playoff drought and led them to the NBA Finals in his first season with the team. While he’s never won a title in his career, he has been the leader of several successful teams. And he could play a similar role in San Antonio.

Moreover, Wemby is also ready to take a massive leap from last season as he issued a warning to the league after his dominance in the Paris Olympics, “I’m learning, and I’m worried for the opponents in a couple of years.”

Leading his country to a silver medal, the Frenchman matured a lot during his Paris experience and it will surely pay dividends in his growth in the NBA. If the team starts winning, more superstars would want to join the Spurs and play with Victor Wembanyama.
