Since the age of four, Stephen Curry understood what competition meant. He would go to watch his father, Dell Curry, play for the Charlotte Bobcats. Furthermore, it was always part of his DNA. His mother Sonya played collegiate volleyball, a trait that passed on to his sister Sydel. He and his younger brother Seth Curry chose to follow their father, going to NBA practices and honing their shots since middle school. Naturally, as a family, even though loving, one sensation prevails. They are always competing.
Some would argue that’s the nature of an athlete. Without the yearning to emerge victorious, it’s hard to push past those barriers. Luckily for Stephen Curry, he had to learn how to fight in his competitive family. But even years after making it, that part of them hasn’t changed. While playing golf alongside his wife Ayesha Curry and Emily Chang, the Baby Face Assassin shared how even modest occasions turn into competitive warfare in the Curry household. “It’s still competitive. It’s extremely competitive. Playing HORSE in the driveway, card games, board games whatever it is. The whole vibe of just wanting to win at everything is definitely there,” he said.

For him, it was second nature. However, to Ayesha, an entrepreneur with no sports background, she had to learn how to fit in. But while Curry tried to articulate that to Chang, it quickly took a humorous turn. His usage of “obviously” forced the two-time New York Times best-selling author to reveal some secrets.

“Don’t say obvious. I can beat you in a f*****g race,” Ayesha retorted while on The Circuit. That, in fact, is true. Stephen Curry humbly admitted to his defeat admitting, “I got video footage of her beating me in a footrace at Under Armour’s headquarters”. Safe to say even without a sports background, competition doesn’t intimidate Ayesha Curry. Competition also made itself known as a prevalent factor for Stephen Curry and his sibling as the possibility of a historic milestone popped up.
Competition prevents a major family moment for Stephen Curry
The degree of competition in the Curry family can be misunderstood. It isn’t just inter-family events that have an impact. In times when LeBron James is playing with his son, the possibility of playing alongside family tends to be of appeal. In the NBA today, both Steph and Seth Curry actively take part.

They are also masters of the same skill, shooting the ball from a distance. The younger Curry being a 43% three-point shooter and adept at playing without the ball, would have been a more than ideal fit to replace Klay Thompson. It’s a future opportunity the Hornets star keep himself open to. However, if it were up to him, he wouldn’t want to play alongside his brother.
“I wouldn’t be against it, but it’s definitely not my preferred choice to be on the same team as him definitely right now. I also like competing against him and trying to beat the best,” the 34-year-old told NBC in 2022.

Does the Curry family's competitive nature fuel their success, or is it just sibling rivalry at play?

There’s always a standoff between the brothers. For Seth, he watched both his father Dell and Stephen Curry navigate through long NBA careers. Rather than being under his wing, the former Mavericks guard looks to learn and pushes himself intending to best his elder sibling.

Although, before being a prominent role player in the NBA, the brothers shared the floor together. After going undrafted, Seth Curry spent time with the Warriors. He appeared in six NBA games with Stephen Curry before being waived by the franchise. In a later stage of his career, he might consider a reunion.
But for now, competition holds deeper significance in the Curry family.
