Is Nikola Jokic's $375,000 splurge a sign of success or a slap in the face to Serbia's government?

There is no place like home. While the Paris Olympics are long gone, Nikola Jokic’s brotherhood for his Serbian teammates is still winning people’s hearts. It has been only a few weeks since he led the team to a bronze medal and brought glory to his homeland. Being one of the few events in which Serbia secured a medal, the nation’s Government even announced a hefty reward for the ball players. However, The Joker has one-upped them by making a generous $375,000 splurge on his teammates to commemorate the historic victory.

Yes, Jokic has reportedly spent over $375,000 to buy slick Rolex watches for his entire national team. That means each one of his Serbian brothers will have a memento worth $32,500 wrapped around their wrist to remember the special moment and be reminded of Jokic’s love for them. Meanwhile, the Serbian Government is set to reward each player with 60,000 Euros in dinar for the third-place finish. Even head coach Svetislav Pesic will receive the reward for his leadership on the international stage.

Comparing the amount to other medal winners of the nation, the Serbian Government has announced a reward of 200,000 Euros in dinar for the gold medallists, including each member of the men’s water polo team. Sure, with three golds, one silver, and one bronze secured at the event, the Government is cumulatively paying a much higher amount than what Jokic spent on the watches. But it should be noted that The Joker has made the gesture by loosening his own pockets. However, it shouldn’t have much impact on his bank balance. Being one of the biggest stars in the NBA, Jokic’s earnings are significantly higher than his Serbian teammates. As of now, he is set to enter the second year of his $276 million contract, and the numbers will only get crazier moving forward.

Nikola Jokic’s celebration proved what the Olympic bronze meant to him

Sure, Jokic and his crew were not able to stand on the center podium with gold around their necks. But when they look back on this journey, the bronze medal win is also a historic moment for the team. And it was evident how much it meant to them Jokic’s reaction after defeating Germany in their final game as he was highly animated throughout the whole ceremony. Moreover, the celebration continued post-Olympics as Jokic was even seen singing the tunes of his native land with his fellow Serbian teammates while they were on the team bus.

Then, there was also the viral video of a shirtless Jokic celebrating with his friends and family back home and singing at the top of his lungs. And this is the same guy who was distraught at the thought of participating in the parade last year after winning an NBA Championship with the Nuggets. “No! I need to go home.” Jokic responded when he found out when the parade was. But maybe, that’s just the kind of love he has for his country and his fellow countrymen.
