It looks like Stephen Curry is going to remain a ‘Warrior for life’. Inking a one-year $62.6 million extension, he has solidified his future with the team for the next three years. But now, the big question remains: How far can he take the Warriors next season? And only a few days after taking a massive dig at Steph, his former teammate Nick Young took another brutal shot at the Baby-Faced Assassin while discussing his season expectations in a heated debate with Brandon Jennings.
“Kyrie is the Kobe to Curry MJ, ppl scared to say he’s better.” With this recent tweet, ‘Swaggy P’ made his stance clear about the Kyrie Irving-Stephen Curry debate on who, according to him, is a better player. But he took the disrespect a step further on Gil’s Arena pod as he posed an intriguing question, “Do Steph gotta take this team to the playoffs?” During his first three title runs, Steph made seven straight playoff appearances and played in five finals. But he had an elite supporting cast of Klay, Draymond, and KD helping him along the way. Then, following Durant’s departure, Steph has missed the playoffs three times in the last five years. And another failed season could have an impact on his legacy. However, Brandon Jennings quickly came to Steph’s rescue responding to Young’s question, “No!”
But Young countered by making a bold comparison, “(Allen) Iverson had to take a team like that to the playoffs. Why Steph don’t have to take a team like that to the playoffs?” Sure enough, he was referring to AI single-handedly leading the Sixers to the finals in 2001 and bagging the MVP honors that very year. However, the argument left Jennings fuming, as Iverson was 25 years old at the time and in the prime of his career. Meanwhile, Steph is in his late 30s with his peak far behind.

A frustrated Jennings yelled, “Stop comparing Steph to Iverson. How about that? Stop that sh*t! Stop that sh*t!” As per the former Bucks star, AI was yet to prove himself during his finals run while Steph does not have anything left to prove next season because he is already a four-time champion. But Young stuck to his stance. “He (Iverson) took them to the finals. He (Steph) gotta take the team to the play-in.”
Stephen Curry is still all about winning championships
While Young and Jennings continue to stay divided on the topic, Stephen Curry is not focused on the outside noise. After extending his stay in the Bay Area, he made his intentions clear for next season. “It’s still about winning… and taking the steps necessary to give ourselves a chance. The standard hasn’t changed. The expectation hasn’t changed.” Yes, he is 36 years old now. But Steph is still ‘the man’ on his team as he averaged 26.4 points last season.
Moreover, he proved that he has still got that clutch gene with his dominant performance in the final two games of the Paris Olympics. Although he will no longer have Klay by his side, Steph expects nothing but greatness from himself and his team. And his contract extension has made his focus clearer, “I’ve always said I wanted to play for one team my whole career. So, it’s good to get [the extension] question out of the way and give complete focus to basketball and to the season.”
