It’s a tough day to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. After a dramatic comeback from 0 to 3 in the Stanley Cup Finals, they fell short in Game 7, leaving the “City of Champions” to continue to soak in misery. And the Oilers’ best player, Connor McDavid, found himself at the receiving end again, as they failed 7-seasons in a row. And, the fans online traced parallels between him and Kevin Durant, as they swarmed the social media comments attacking both superstars. Notably, it wasn’t long ago when Kylian Mbappé received a similar treatment.

Addressing those who aren’t aware of McDavid’s domination in the NHL, the soft-spoken center man is arguably the best player in the league. Despite racking up his showcase with numerous accolades, he couldn’t take home the Stanley Cup. Ahead of the 2023-24 season, McDavid’s Oilers couldn’t get a sniff of the trophy as they lost in the postseason 5 consecutive times. This year, it looked like the team broke the jinx but the Florida Panthers took home a 2-1 win in Game 7.

This left the fans with no options other than comparing him to Kevin Durant. The 2007 #2 pick had an incredible stint with the OKC Thunder, averaging 27.4 points and 7 rebounds in 9 seasons. But, the superstar couldn’t get a ring. He couldn’t wait any longer and made a move to the Bay Area in his free agency. And, boom, he won 2 rings in a row. Looking at Connor McDavid’s 9-season-long run, it seems like, he too has to take a similar route.

However, taking that route comes with a price. The fans could write down a star, labeling them as ‘ring chasers’. Kevin Durant had a tough time, making that decision, as the OKC fans were after him for almost all the time. Even Kylian Mbappé faced a similar situation when he made a move to Real Madrid during his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain F.C.

McDavid gets slandered as fans draw a Kevin Durant parallel

Fans often turn to social media to cope with their favorite team’s loss. Some fans engage in safe spaces to make their opinion. Right after the Oilers’ loss, an X handle dropped a post, asking their followers to make an NBA comparison for Connor McDavid. While fans pointed out various stars in the league like Luka Doncic and several others, a small portion of fans pointed out the KD link.

A fan wrote, “2016 Kevin Durant”. The year plays a significant role in the comment as it was KD’s last year at the OKC Thunder fold. Until then the Slim Reaper hadn’t won a trophy. And, another fan further doubled it down, saying, “Kevin Durant because of skillset, and because he gonna have to end up leaving to finally win.” This fan not only predicted the KD link right but also predicted McDavid to trade out in the offseason just like Durant did in 2016. Another fan, sharing the same idea, wrote, “KD if he never joined the Warriors.”

While fans named other superstars like LeBron James and Jayson Tatum, these players have already won rings for their first teams. But, KD’s comparison with Connor McDavid is apt as he is also standing in the 9th season with his first team without a ring.
