No family ties between Klay and Skylar Thompson! Who else thought they were brothers?

Klay Thompson and Skylar Thompson. Another Thompson brother? Sister…? We know who Klay’s brothers are. He’s got two of them, and Julie and Mychal Thompson have just three boys. So, who could this new Thompson be? Skylar is the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback. Yup, he is an NFL dude.

No relation to the NBA whatsoever. Or the Thompsons of the NBA, either. All they share are the same last names and that too, by chance. Those interested in both sports or just the NFL would know that the 27-year-old is the latest in a series of injured players that Miami has lost recently. Well, if we are being more specific, the latest in quarterback injuries.

The Dolphins backup QB’s chest injury happened midway through the third quarter and just over a week after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion. Miami, for its part, had a painful loss, 24-3, to the Seahawks. As for Skylar, he did his best to stay in the game, but it was clear that the hit from Seattle’s linebacker, Tyrel Dodson, did a number on him.

Now that we have established that Skylar Thompson and Klay Thompson are not related, why don’t we take a look at the actual Thompson brothers?

Who is the older brother of Klay Thompson?

Have an interesting take?

Mychel Thompson is the oldest of the Thompson boys. Born on June 1, 1988, he is a retired professional basketball player, currently working as a video coordinator with the Golden State Warriors. Of course, the timing is messy, given the whole Klay Thompson-Dubs adieu. But the Thompson brothers know very well to keep their professional lives out of their personal lives.

After all, they were born to the former 2x NBA champion Mychal Thompson and has an athlete for a mother. So, they are quite aware of what entails being an athlete. Coming back to Mychel, the 36-year-old spent much of his time with the G League, having gone undrafted in 2011. In the midst of playing for various G League teams, the eldest Thompson did get a short stint with the Cavaliers, but he was waived after just five games.

However, he found something of stability with the Santa Cruz Warriors, winning a championship with them in 2015. Following this, Mychel Thompson had a short stint overseas, playing for the Italian team, Pallacanestro Varese. Once again, he kept moving from one team to another, until Mychel announced his retirement in 2018.

After his professional career, Mychel Thompson has pretty much stayed out of the public eye, occasionally coming to watch Klay. But seeing as how he is now in an active role with the Warriors, we will likely see more of the older Thompson brother.

The youngest Thompson decided on the unusual route – baseball

That’s right. Trayce Thompson found his calling in baseball. He pursued the sport from his high school days, eventually being scouted by the Chicago White Sox, making his debut for the team in early August 2015. Over the course of nine years, Trayce played for nine teams, thrice for the Sox and twice for the Dodgers and the Cubs.

The latest news about the 33-year-old was that he had signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs and that he joined the Iowa Cubs after being released by the New York Mets. Trayce Thompson is the definition of perseverance! But then again, when you have two older brothers who are highly competitive, it’s natural you would develop the same trait.

Take this, for instance. When the kids were young, Trayce (10) had beaten Mychel (12 or 13) in a driveway basketball game. But his older brother didn’t take too kindly to the defeat. “He said he was going to run away. It was funny,” Trayce recounted in a 2015 interview with Bleacher Report. How did he fare against Klay Thompson?

“Klay and I were so competitive. I’ve seen him break at least three clubs when we’re golfing. I’m better than him. I golf a lot,” he revealed. Seeing that Klay wasn’t going to beat his younger brother with skills, the 4x champion took a leaf out of Draymond Green’s playbook – trash-talking.

Anyway, the three brothers have all carved out an identity for themselves. And as for Klay Thompson, the 2024-25 season is going to be do-or-die. Joining the championship-contending Mavs led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the 34-year-old is hoping to get back the Klay we knew before the back-to-back injuries. There’s no doubt the first Warriors-Mavericks matchup is going to be an electrifying one. Can’t wait!
