For a moment there, everyone thought Team USA had set themselves up for one of the biggest upsets in Olympic basketball history. With a disappointing first-half performance, they went down a 17-point hole and were only a quarter away from elimination. But that’s when LeBron James and Stephen Curry took matters into their own hands and muscled a historic fourth-quarter comeback to lead the Americans to a 95-91 win. Impressed by their performance, NFL legend Robert Griffin III couldn’t stop praising the two legends but also raised a massive concern for Team USA.
Hyped after LeBron and Steph’s performance, Griffin tweeted, “LeBron James SAVED Team USA with the 4th Triple Double in Olympic History against Serbia. Chef Curry went for 36 points at 36 years old. They aren’t too old.” Sure enough, he bestowed them with a huge honor: “They are the 2 BEST BASKETBALL PLAYERS IN THE WORLD.” Even though some people had doubts about their age ahead of the tournament, LeBron and Steph proved to be the two most crucial players in the win against Serbia.

Continuing his dominant run in Paris, LeBron created history in the semi-final by becoming the only player in Olympic history to post two triple-doubles. Yes, the 39YO did everything on the court and finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. While he etched his name in the history books by recording the event’s fourth-ever triple-double, Steph also had a game for the ages as he went off for 36 points when his team needed him the most.
Going nine of fourteen from the three-point line, the Baby-Faced Assassin was unstoppable against Serbia. Although Griffin had high praise for LeBron and Steph, he also introduced the Americans to the harsh reality, He stated, “But make no mistake. They are TOO OLD FOR THIS SH*T. Ain’t no way a team with 7 NBA Champions should only beat Serbia by 4 points. Period.”
While it’s amazing to see a 39YO LeBron James and a 36YO Stephen Curry balling out even at this age, this is ideally not the situation Team USA would have wanted heading into the tournament. Even Kevin Durant can be added to that discussion as he has also been dominant in Paris despite being one of the oldest players on the roster. But the young superstars on the team have not stepped up to the occasion so far.
Apart from a few random flurries here and there, like Bam Adebayo’s 18-point outburst against South Sudan or Anthony Edwards’ 26-point game against Puerto Rico, the responsibility of carrying the team has rested on the shoulders of the older players. And that could lead to trouble in the finals against France.
Should Team USA be worried?
While Team USA has legends like LeBron, Steph, and KD taking care of business, they also have four other NBA Champions on the squad. Moreover, three of them, Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Jrue Holiday are the most recent winners with the Boston Celtics. With so much firepower, Griffin and surely millions of other Americans expected them to blow Serbia out in the semi-final.
But three-time MVP Nikola Jokic was enough to give multiple future Hall of Famers a run for their money and nearly shattered their dream of winning gold. Although Steph and LeBron bailed them out this time, Team USA might not be so lucky when they face the home team for the gold medal match.
It was before the tournament that Joel Embiid raised concerns about Team USA’s potential to win because of their aging superstars. “You look at the talent that the U.S. has, but there’s equal talent on other teams. And the talent that’s on the U.S. team, you also got to understand most of those guys are older. The LeBron now is not the LeBron that was a couple of years ago … I think people get fooled by the names on paper. But those names have been built throughout their career, and now they’re older. They’re not what they used to be,” explained Embiid. But while the veterans have proven their mettle every game, it’s the young guys who have failed to take over.

With only one game remaining in the tournament, Team USA will need their entire roster to step up as they face their toughest opponents so far. Led by 20YO sensation Victor Wembanyama, France has wreaked havoc in the Olympics just like Team USA. After losing to Germany in the group stage, they fixed their mistake and eliminated the reigning World Champions from the tournament with a 73-69 win in the semi-final. And it will be tough for Team USA to penetrate France’s defense which is led by Wemby and Rudy Gobert. Moreover, they have multiple NBA players on their squad who have the ability to take over on any given night. So, Team USA needs all hands on deck for the gold medal match. Do you think they can come together one last time despite the concerns from the NFL legend?
