For a draft night predicted to be less interesting than last year, the 2024 edition is certainly turning out to be quite the opposite. The anticipated top pick took a sharp turn with the introduction of Zaccharie Risacher, prior to which Alexandre Sarr dominated the chatter. And as anticipated, the Atlanta Hawks selected Risacher with their No. 1 pick. Sarr, for his part, heard his name called next as the Wizards quickly jumped in to bring the 7’0 big man to Washington.
As the first round of the Draft Night continues to roll out in New York, NFL legend, Pat McAfee posted a rather interesting comment. It’s worth mentioning that, for the second consecutive year, international players have been chosen as the top pick. Last year saw French phenom and “generational talent” Victor Wembanyama making all the noise. And this year, it was fellow French natives, Risacher and Sarr at the top. Of course, the sheer excitement is nothing close to Wemby’s moment, but definitely headline-worthy.
So the popular podcaster had just one question – “The French can hoop huh?” Although it’s more of a rhetorical question, the implication cannot be dismissed. Players like the Spurs legend Tony Parker, the Wolves’ defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert, Victor Wembanyama, and now, Zaccharie Risacher, and Alexandre Sarr are living proof of the French domination in the league.

But there is something else that might be of interest here – the salaries of these young athletes. And the difference would surprise you.
Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr are set to earn a handsome amount as opposed to NFL’s No.1 pick!
The 2024 NFL Draft in April saw the Chicago Bears with the top pick. And their choice? 22-year-old quarterback, Caleb Williams. While the ‘Windy City’ fans rejoiced at the fact that the Bears finally look like they might see some success with the arrival of Williams, the remuneration he receives will leave one jaw-dropped when compared to his cross-sport league.
Veteran ESPN sports business analyst Andrew Brandt dropped an X post that showed this difference. “Top pick in NBA Draft, Zaccharie Risacher, will make $57M over four years.” And on the other hand, “Top pick in NFL Draft, Caleb Williams, will make $38M over four years.”
According to Spotrac, the No. 2 pick in the NBA, which is Sarr this year, also earns more than Caleb in 4 years. Alex’s wages over four years come to $51.1 million. And if we were to take the difference in both Risacher and Sarr’s salaries with that of Williams, the total amounts to a staggering $32 million!
That is a huge difference. But even without this, there still is a wide gap.
When Zaccharie and Alex will be earning around $13-14 million and $12-13 million annually, respectively, Caleb will be receiving just $9.5 million a year. All that for getting hit, tossed, kicked, and running like the Devil himself is at your heels.
