Did Derrick White just expose the real dynamics within the Celtics by snubbing Grant Williams as godfather?

If you remember, Derrick White‘s introduction to Team USA came with a lot of backlash. That’s because it came at the cost of Jaylen Brown. However, looking at the hoopers’ spotless record, nobody seems to be talking about the controversy anymore. Rather, the Celt has been Steve Kerr’s go-to glue guy. With yet another dominant win in the tournament, it is clear that Team USA is aiming for nothing less than gold. Following their impressive win over Brazil in the quarterfinals, Derrick White ran into an old friend! He met his former teammate Grant Williams, who is currently working as a correspondent for the Olympics, and initiated some family talk.

There was a funny exchange of words between the former teammates after their meeting. “I heard a rumor that you were considering naming your son after a former teammate. Is that true?” Grant Williams asked Derrick White. “Who was that teammate? And did he end up being the godfather of your children?” The reigning NBA champ, who is a father of two sons, Hendrix and Daxton, recognized the humor in the question and structured his reply with a twist.

“You know, in this game of basketball you learn a lot of things, and every locker room is a little different,” White told Williams. “But Grant Williams was never in consideration for my child’s name. My kid will give you a high-five, though, so you’ve got that going for you. Maybe just be around more. You’re an absentee, self-proclaimed godfather,” quotes via Boston Globe. Even though the Team USA star sounded a bit brutal with his reasoning, this sheds light on the lighthearted bond the duo has shared over the years.

Grant Williams, who is currently playing for the Hornets, was a valuable rotation player for the Celtics during his time with them. Besides that, he was also famous for his banter among his teammates in Boston. The two are known to playfully mock each other in the past. Back in 2018, Derrick White took a jab at Williams following his departure from the Celtics.

This was not the only time the Celt roasted his former teammate. In 2023, White took another jab, following Grant’s move to the Mavs. “It’s a lot quieter over there without Grant Williams, that’s for sure. It’s much calmer. Life is good, Derrick White jokingly said, about the scrimmages without his pal.

Maybe this was Williams trying to get back at the Team USA star, but sadly, the 25-year-old’s efforts hilariously backfired! Despite the brutal reasoning from Derrick White, no love seems to be lost between the two. Even though Grant is playing for a different team right now, it seems like White never misses the chance to treat him like the little brother he once had at the Boston Celtics.

However, it’s time to romp back into the present day. With a lot at stake, Derrick White, who was verbally slaughtered by parts of the fanbase after being called up, even though it wasn’t his fault, has a tough road ahead.

With just two games left in the Olympics, some hoop enthusiasts have already sealed Team USA’s fate in this Olympics as the winner! However, some analysts and netizens have claimed that LeBron James and Co. are yet to face a stern challenge in the Olympics because of the group they were allotted.

Do you think there is there any truth to it? Well, there is no definitive answer to it until they face the best team in the other bracket. With names like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis at the top of their game, Team USA is stomping through the tournament, crushing every team it has faced so far.
