Is this Netflix docuseries with Obama and LeBron the most star-studded sports project ever?

In the age of streaming platforms, there’s no shortage of content that can be binge-watched. With docuseries high in demand, it provides the perfect avenue to immerse in behind-the-scenes pictures. And that’s why sports docuseries are in trend. Series can have a transformative impact on a society and this has been proven in the past. Netflix is aiming to do the same with their new venture starring LeBron James.

Netflix changed the whole dynamic of F1 with its ‘Drive to Survive’ docuseries. While the NBA doesn’t need that sort of revolutionary push, the $260bn company is expanding its reach by offering fans greater insights into the lives of their favorite NBA stars.

Netflix recently announced it is set to premiere its ‘Starting 5′ docuseries on October 9. The series will feature LeBron James, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, and Domantas Sabonis. What’s more, this series comes after former US President Barack Obama and former NFL champion Peyton Manning joined forces. The two will be among the cast of producers, including Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, Philip Byron and Randy Mims, representing UNINTERRUPTED. Obama will accompany his wife, Michelle, Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis to Higher Ground Productions. Peyton Manning will be co-producing alongside Jamie Horowitz and Sam Pepper for Omaha Productions.

The series will feature an in-depth journey of the five NBA stars throughout the 2023-24 season. Their personal and professional challenges, locker room stories and on-court cinematics will be a part of the 10 45-minute episodes. No other details have been provided as of now, but we can expect more updates before the premier of the show. While LeBron James is the biggest star in the docuseries, the other 4 stars will also have significant features, sharing some of the spotlight with the King. But LeBron is no rookie in the documentary game and his legion fans can expect one “Last Dance” from the Lakers star soon.

LeBron James might replicate Michael Jordan’s documentary hit

Winning rings and all is fine, but having a documentary to your name just hits different. Netflix released Michael Jordan’s ‘Last Dance’ series during the COVID-19 pandemic, making it a global hit. So it will be only fitting if LeBron gets a similar one as well after he ultimately calls it a day.

Have an interesting take?

According to Lakers radio voice John Ireland, Last Dance’s director Andy Thompson is already moving his pieces to create a LeBron James documentary of similar flair. “I hope I’m not talking out of school here, Andy Thompson … has spent a ton of time with us this year,” Ireland told Awful Announcing. “So, if LeBron ever wanted to go down this road, I think Andy is stockpiling that just so he has it and has the opportunity to tell the story.”

LeBron even has his production medium in SpringHill Company founded in 2020. The production company has a long list of projects under its resume, featuring, “More Than an Athlete”, “Shut Up and Dribble”, “I Promise” and the 2021 movie “Space Jam: A New Legacy”. But there has been no confirmation on the mentioned type of documentary in pipeline, so we’ll just have to wait till October to witness LeBron in all his glory on the TV screen.
