Nearly Killing an “Unplanned” Stephen Curry, Mother Sonya Clarified How She Turned “Lemons into Lemonade” as a Young Mom

Sonya Curry is very well known for being a strict yet loving parent. The podcast clips of her varying parenting techniques have gone viral. So it seems almost unbelievable that she once considered aborting her oldest child, Stephen Curry.

Imagine the NBA without Stephen Curry. With the impact Steph has had on the NBA, it seems unfathomable to think about the league’s history without the Warriors legend. But that would have been the case if Steph’s mother, Sonya Curry had gone with her first instinct to abort her oldest child 35 years ago. Married to NBA legend Dell Curry, Sonya got pregnant with Chef Curry at a very young age.

Sonya Curry almost aborted Stephen Curry

Sonya Curry was a guest on the Foster & Friends podcast, where she discussed how her life changed after the birth of her oldest son, Stephen Curry. Sonya revealed that the couple did not plan to have Chef Curry, “Stephen wasn’t planned.” Getting pregnant in her early 20s, Sonya had a big decision in hand. Fortunately, she decided to switch things around and planned to have all her children at a young age so that Dell and Sonya would still be young when their children grew up. “You turn lemons into lemonade.” Sonya said.

Sonya thanks her stars that she decided to keep her oldest child as that changed the course of her life. Dell and Sonya became parents to three beautiful children. Their two sons, Stephen Curry and Seth Curry became elite players in the NBA, and their daughter made a successful career in volleyball and media.

Sonya Curry’s life is better than she ever imagined

Sonya Curry has lived the NBA life since her youth. Married to an NBA player, she had to deal with a lot of limelight even in her 20s. The 57-year-old is now a mother of three and grandmother to several young kids. “Pray and be present.” Sonya revealed her mantra to have a strong bond with her family.

Not having the responsibility of a full-time job, Sonya makes sure to utilize that time by strengthening her relationship with her kids and grandkids. She spends time with each of her children in rotation, living with them for a few days. It is great to see Sonya living a life she did not even dream of.

Even the NBA fans would be thankful that Sonya Curry did not decide to follow her instinct and abort Steph. The sports world would have missed out on witnessing one of the Greatest Players in NBA history, and the NBA probably would have been a center-dominated league to this day.
