Will LeBron's retirement tour be the most epic farewell in NBA history?

“Not very long” is how LeBron James described the potential timeline of his marvelous career spanning over two decades. Being 40 next season, LeBron James signed a two-year $104 million extension with the Purple and Gold. The primary purpose of it seemingly is an opportunity to play beside his son, Bronny. The second year is a choice left to him. Does he take it? Not according to NBA2K.

In a major leak from the newest iteration Take 2 Interactive’s NBA2K25 is a farewell tour for the King. The $27 billion company, as per Companies Market Cap, has added an unprecedented feature that could hint at the 2024-25 season being the ‘last ride’. Through it, players are given an option to let James go on a farewell tour.

As part of the unique option, after each game one of the opposition players will be seen exchanging jerseys with the 20-time All-Star. In the tweet, Stephen Curry, the most high-profile member of the Warriors and a close confidante of LeBron James is seen exchanging uniforms with him.

However, it doesn’t necessarily mean James retires within one season of the new game. The choice will reside with the users. If they choose to give him a farewell tour, the outcome will be irreversible. Further details are still unknown, but it’s enlightening to see NBA2K be considerate and add a special feature for the Akron Hammer.

Bryce doesn’t believe it, but LeBron James could play with his younger son

Whenever asked about retirement, James has always been vague. His statements are open to interpretation. In terms of his comfort playing, even though it might be physically more taxing, he is still elite. He led the Purple and Gold in scoring last season, even touching 40 on three separate occasions.

Still, one would think playing the entire length of his contract is unfathomable. But James has hinted at going a year beyond. During a commercial for Beats last October, Savannah James dropped a clue about his intentions to create history not just once with Bronny, but twice, even alongside Bryce.

“Tell them you’re not done until you play with your son. Then do that—again,” she said in the advert. Later, the dashing forward reiterated those sentiments in a tweet. What will it take? Being a junior in high school, the earliest Bryce James can get drafted is in 2026-27. That would entail James to play the entirety of his current contract with the Lakers after which he becomes a restricted free agent.

If those comments were indeed genuine and Bryce can rise as a promising prospect, he can simply sign with the team that drafts his 17-year-old son. Lower-end teams could use it to lure his services. But Bryce is not hopping on that train. “Waiting until I – nah, that’s too much. That’s too much, no. No, good lord. He’s going to be 42, bro” he said of the potential of it happening

However, when it comes to LeBron James, everything is unpredictable. No one thought he would sustain till 40. Is it that hard to comprehend him playing another three seasons then?
