With the trade deadline just a few weeks away, the NBA world has been ablaze with trade rumors. Recent reports suggest a potential reunion between Dejounte Murray and his former team. The San Antonio Spurs had previously traded away their star point guard during the summer of 2022 to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for three first-round picks, as part of their strategy to rebuild from scratch.
However, the Hawks’ aspiration to elevate the team to championship contention by pairing Murray with Trae Young hasn’t materialized, leading them to make Dejounte Murray “widely available,” as per Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer. The 27-year-old has plenty of suitors pursuing him, with the Lakers and the 76ers at the forefront of the Murray sweepstakes. However, the Spurs’ “exploratory interest” could potentially disrupt their chances.

Tuesday on Run It Back, Shams Charania reported that Murray’s former team is interested in a reunion if he is available. “But one team that has a level of exploratory interest I’m told is his former team, the San Antonio Spurs,” stated Charania. He further added that the Spurs have enough draft capital and a ton of draft picks if they want to acquire their former point guard.

Following his 4-year, $120 million extension with the Hawks, Dejounte Murray’s current season’s cap hit stands slightly above $18 million, and he’s slated to earn just under $25 million next season. If the Spurs were to strike a deal, they could easily match his salary with expiring contracts such as Doug McDermott, Devonte Graham, and Cedi Osman.

The 2016 first-round pick is averaging 20.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists on 46.7 percent shooting efficiency from the floor and 38.4 percent from the deep. His return to the Spurs’ lineup would fulfill a critical need for the team in terms of guard play. The Spurs’ will also greatly benefit from his defensive presence, playmaking, and shot creation. Moreover, the Spurs can also put together a better trade package than other teams that are competing for Dejounte Murray, thanks to their abundance of draft assets between 2024 and ’30.
In addition, since Murray is already familiar with the organization, it would make the transition even more seamless. To add to the list of positives, this potential reunion wouldn’t be a short-term arrangement, given the Spurs’ focus on rebuilding rather than immediate championship contention. They would probably have him under contract through the 2027–2028 season.
