The Atlanta Hawks’ season is not going the way fans expected. While most NBA teams have upgraded their roster in pursuit of winning a Championship, the Hawks made no significant changes this off-season. Their superstar duo of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray have failed to deliver after joining forces in 2022. The Atlanta Hawks are currently 11th in the Eastern Conference standings with a 12-17 record.

Atlanta’s underwhelming performance in the last two seasons has led them to explore trade options for Dejounte Murray. Reportedly, multiple teams other than the New York Knicks have shown interest in acquiring the one-time All-Star.

According to NBA correspondent Marc Stein, “Multiple teams consulted in Orlando believe that the Hawks will explore their trade options with Dejounte Murray over the next six weeks leading up to the Feb. 8 trade deadline.” That means the New York Knicks might have some competition if they wish to add Dejounte Murray to their roster. The Knicks are hovering around the 5th spot in the East and want to take a leap by improving their roster before the trade deadline. They are reportedly eyeing Dejounte Murray as their trade target. He could be a great fit alongside Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.

The Hawks acquired Dejounte Murray in 2022 after his breakout season with the San Antonio Spurs. Murray averaged 20.5 points last season, but the Hawks were stuck as the 7th seed with a 41-41 record. Atlanta saw potential in the 27-year-old guard and gave him a 4-year $120 million extension in July.

However, the Hawks have shown no sign of improvement despite Murray averaging 20.3 points and 5.4 assists this season. It might be time for the Hawks to part ways with the former all-star and find a new star teammate for Trae Young.

Will Dejounte be a good fit in New York?

Dejounte Murray is a talented guard with immense potential. But the 27-year-old has been unable to find an environment that can help him succeed at the big stage. He spent six years in San Antonio when they were in their rebuilding phase. Murray then left Gregg Popovich’s wing and joined forces with Trae Young, but the duo did not pair well due to a similar skill set. If Atlanta decides to part ways with Murray, he might be a great fit for the New York Knicks.

New York is already a solid playoff team, and the addition of Dejounte Murray will give them more firepower. The Knicks can use Murray’s scoring and playmaking ability to make a deeper run in the playoffs this season.
