Since inculcating Chris Paul, the San Antonio Spurs have grown due to his maturity. Victor Wembanyama is playing winning basketball and inspiring his young teammates to learn and develop alongside him. However, given his status as a generational player with an unfathomable ceiling, should the Spurs take a huge gamble? Kevin O’Connor has a crazy idea that would unite the unicorn center with the greatest shooter the NBA has witnessed – Stephen Curry.

Could Wembanyama and Curry be the next unstoppable duo, or is it just a pipe dream?

Have an interesting take?

The Warriors are currently struggling in the first of Curry’s potential three last seasons. They have dropped significantly in the standings and are one game below .500. The Chef remains strong with patience, but there’s one thing that might matter more to him as he approaches his closing act—winning another championship. For that goal, O’Connor suggests that the Spurs should take full advantage of Wembanyama’s rookie-scale contract.

“The rookie scale hack is something that no one is talking about but they absolutely should. The fact that Victor Wembanyama is going to be paid like a less than a mid-level exception over the next two and a half years is why you make a deal for Steph Curry because his deal is exactly lock step with Victor Wembanyama rookie scale contract,” the analyst said on the Kevin O’Connor Show.

Wemby is bound to become the first player to earn a billion dollars through contracts alone. But at this point, still young and making ample, the Spurs have a rare opportunity. “I’m getting the best shooter ever paired with what might be the best defender ever,” O’Connor pointed out.

It would be a dream chance to see arguably the two toughest players to plan against in the modern age. Wembanyama’s mentality to learn and Curry who “has an impeccable record when it comes to setting the tone for your franchise, setting the right habits, being a team-first guy” Kevin O’Connor sees a possible resemblance to what the Miami Heat did by giving Dwyane Wade Shaquille O’Neal.

It sure would be fun to witness their partnership. But there are several roadblocks that stop such a trade.

Stephen Curry would not budge from the Warriors for nothing

To start, Stephen Curry is the highest-paid player this year. Hence, salary matching would require the Spurs to clean out the roster which would include some of their young pillars. The Warriors could very well ask for someone like Stephon Castle to be part of the deal which may not be something the Spurs are open to doing.

Moreover, The Ringer journalist also pointed out the hesitation to give away a hoard of first-round picks just for a chance at a two-year lottery period. What if the Spurs don’t win? The sacrifice could end up being for nothing.

What’s clear is that the Spurs are in no rush to build a championship team. With one of the youngest squads in the league, they are focused on evolving every season and building slowly around Victor Wembanyama. This approach contrasts sharply with the urgency in Golden State, where the Warriors are actively trying to supply Stephen Curry with the help he needs to make a final championship push.

Curry was caught off guard when he learned the Warriors are 1-20 when down after the third quarter. His “What!” encapsulated his disbelief. However, having spent his entire career in the Bay and being the cornerstone of a dynasty, Curry’s desire to win isn’t as intense as his commitment to the team’s foundations.

To him, it’s satisfying as long as the front office is making efforts to improve the roster. According to reports, the Warriors are doing just that. Therefore, breaking Curry’s loyalty seems nearly impossible. That said, the season is still half over. A lot could happen in the coming months. If the Bay continues to struggle, a change of mind could become a possibility.

Though it still seems like an improbable scenario, it’s a reality that would have plenty of fans speculating about a potential duo of Wembanyama and Curry.
