Even at 36, Kevin Durant is hooping and is keeping himself in the MVP talk while doing so. But how long will that continue? “We hope he finishes his career here in Phoenix”—this is what Mat Ishbia had to say about Kevin Durant when asked about his extension. The Suns veteran is still the best player in the team by miles. When he plays, the Phoenix side looks like a title contender. So listening to the guy who cuts the check should be the way to go considering Durant’s days on the court are on an hourglass.
After Durant’s masterful performance against the Lakers on Tuesday, the retirement speculation again took center stage. FanDuel TV’s Run It Back show was the premise for the discussion and Lou Williams believed Mat Ishbia should get the credit for it.
KD is in the final year of his $194 million, 4-year contract he signed with the Nets. Hence, discussion around Durant is bound to take a turn towards a trade. A return to the Bay Area remains a fan-favorite scenario. So where does his future lie? According to former NBA star, Lou will stick around with the Suns.

“You gotta give Mat Ishbia credit. You know, he’s a former basketball player himself. He understands greatness when he had when he sees it, and especially when he’s wearing a uniform that he’s responsible for. And when you’re talking about a guy like Kevin Durant, who’s gonna go down as a Hall of Famer, he’s gonna be a legend,” Lou said.
Praising Durant for changing the game for the big men of the league, Lue added, “So Mat Ishbia having that guy in his uniform at the end of his career in the later years. Why not why not give yourself an opportunity to win as many basketball games you can, then at the same time, celebrate this legend as we should?”

The window for the Suns to win the chip depends on Durant’s availability. According to Ishbia, an extension is on the way, which wasn’t possible last season due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement and budget issues. KD also acknowledged the fact that he had indeed thought about his retirement.

Despite his age, Kevin Durant is still probably the top 10 players in the league at the moment. And that’s what he does, that’s what KD has been doing since he was 8. “As I get older in the league and the league is getting younger, I tend to think about retirement more,” Durant said in an interview with TV One after the Paris Olympics. “[Retirement] creeps in my mind for sure,” Durant added. “I honestly don’t know what I’ll do [when I stop playing]. I have a lot of different interests.”
That is evident with his endeavors through Boardroom, Fan Duel, and more. There have been rumors of Durant returning to Seattle if the city gets a team in the impending NBA expansion. “I’ve been at this since I was 8. It’s gonna be hopefully 30 years of me doing this where every day was centered around the game of basketball. It hasn’t been no other lifestyle but this,” KD said. If Durant indeed signs an extension with the Suns this season or at the end of it, chances will be high that he will be wrapping up his career in Phoenix.
