The 2025 free agency is set to be a hail Mary window for a lot of franchises. With speculations over futures of many enticing names, Kevin Durant’s prospects shine the brightest with legit interest league-wide. The Suns forward is still one of the top players in the NBA at 36. With the Arizona side faltering in their bid to a championship in their win-now window, Durant’s future remains a conversation that now has a dark horse to watch out for.
According to reports from Brett Siegel, Texas might be the home for KD next season. “There have been whispers among league personnel about the possibility of the Spurs pursuing Durant and creating the best offensive trio in the league next to Fox and Wembanyama,” Siegel wrote for ClutchPoints.
So, the Suns might be in for a shock this summer. If this trade goes through, it will be entirely on them. Confused? Remember how eager Mat Ishbia’s side was to bring Jimmy Butler aboard during the previous trade window? They tried everything, even dangling Bradley Beal, but that had major roadblocks. Things took a turn for the worse when they even considered trading Kevin Durant to land the former Heat star. While the deal ultimately fell through, putting KD on the table was a risky move.

There’s no doubt that losing Kevin Durant could prove costly. They don’t have another experienced talent like the 2x champion. So, this could easily backfire on them. On the flip side, if Kevin Durant and Victor Wembanyama ever share the same squad, it’ll send chills down the spine of every team in the league. The Spurs might not seem dominant now, considering their injury list, but next season could very well be theirs. But hold on. Isn’t it too early to predict? Apparently, the Spurs aren’t the only ones in line as the Celtics are reportedly eyeing the veteran as well.

Kevin Durant could be calling Boston home next season
With changes in the wind in Boston, the Celtics’ future is set to be a matter of interest. After the $6.1 billion sale to Bill Chisholm, the franchise could be forced to clear the locker room to balance the books in the coming years. Thanks to the CBA, the Celtics’ payroll is estimated to be upwards of $500 million in the 2025-26 season with second apron punishments looming large. Amid all the chaos there are murmurs of Kevin Durant going green with the leprechuans.
Recently during an episode of First Things First, Nick Wright revealed the idea of KD going to Boston in the summer. “Two totally unrelated people, both of whom have reputations for knowing things that other people don’t know, have said to me – watch out for Durant in Boston,” Wright told his co-hosts. Looking at the salary cap, that seems like fool’s gold, but the Luka Doncic trade proved, nothing is off the table in the NBA.
What’s your perspective on:
Will the Suns regret dangling Kevin Durant in trade talks if he leaves for a rival?
Have an interesting take?
The Cs rotation players like Sam Hauser and the Sixth Man Of the Year candidate, Payton Pritchard, have recently been linked with moves away to ease the financial pressure. Even Jaylen Brown’s name has been floated on the market. A mega trade involving Durant and Brown might take third-party assistance with picks and all but breaking up the band could be met with major backlash in Boston that the new ownership would not be keen on.

For now, KD’s focus is on the Suns’ playoff push. With only 8 games remaining, the Suns are a game behind the final play-in spot, currently occupied by the Mavericks. So the next few games will not only be key for the Phoenix’s future but also be indicative of Kevin Durant’s next move.
