After a few seasons of indecision, the Toronto Raptors have made it clear that they are going to rebuild around first-time NBA All-Star, Scottie Barnes. The Raptors have already traded the likes of Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby to the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks, respectively. They have been busy with this trade deadline, as they already have completed a deal for Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji from the Utah Jazz.
Now, the Raptors are reportedly finalizing their second trade of the day. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, “The Raptors are trading Dennis Schroder to the Nets for Spencer Dinwiddie, sources tell ESPN.” In addition to acquiring Schroder, the Nets will also receive 35-year-old veteran Thaddeus Young as part of the trade. The Los Angeles Lakers were reportedly interested in Dennis Schroder. However, it looks like now the Nets have won the race for the German international.

The 30-year-old German point guard has averaged 13.7 points, 6.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 30 minutes of playing time this season. Meanwhile, Spencer Dinwiddie has averaged 12.6 points, 6 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 31 minutes of playing time with the Nets. While the stats might be nearly identical, Schroder’s contract expires after the 2024/25 season. Whereas Spencer Dinwiddie’s contract, valued at $20,357,143, is set to expire after the 2023/24 season, providing the Raptors with substantial cap space for the upcoming offseason.
Despite already completing two trades on the deadline, it looks like the Raptors aren’t done yet. Recent reports have suggested that Bruce Brown is attracting significant interest, especially from the Lakers and the Knicks. The Raptors have fully committed to a rebuild, but will this strategic overhaul lead to success for them in the long term?
