Chaos! Probably the best way to describe last night’s Warriors vs Grizzlies game. Well, it ended with Draymond Green getting ejected after getting a tech for chirping at the officials from the bench. But he was not the only one who had problems with the way the game was being officiated. Surprisingly, Memphis HC Taylor Jenkins revealed his concern about the controversial foul Draymond committed on Zach Edey that could have led to a serious injury.
Questioning the league’s moral code, the head coach said post-game, “We were about to start the break, and (Edey’s) been playing really hard to try to outlet. Draymond grabs his leg, pulls him down and it doesn’t get reviewed. So, I know there’s a code in this league and I don’t understand how that wasn’t reviewed. Very disappointing.”

Well, the incident occurred in the third quarter when Green got past Jaren Jackson Jr. and drove to the basket. Unfortunately, he lost his footing and fell straight to the floor. As Edey picked up the loose ball to initiate a fast break, his foot got caught up in Green’s arm and he hit the deck hard. Sure enough, the officials called a foul on the former DPOY. But the replays showed that Draymond might have intentionally tightened his grip on the foot to stop the Grizzlies from scoring.

Of course, the Grizzlies believed it should have been a transition take foul and the refs reached the same conclusion after discussing the play. And Desmond Bane converted the resulting free throw. But Jenkins wanted it to be a more severe penalty on Draymond as the play could have injured Edey. It’s noteworthy that it was the same ankle Edey injured earlier this year during the Summer League.

Did the refs let Draymond Green off too easy, or was Jenkins overreacting to the foul?

Yes, there was no penalty for Draymond on the Edey play. But he did get tossed from the game late in the fourth quarter. He got penalized with two quick technical fouls for chirping at the officials from the bench.

Unfortunately for Jenkins, this happened when there was only over a minute left and the outcome of the game had already been determined in the Warriors’ favor. Moreover, Green finished the night with thirteen points and seven assists.
Had action been taken against him earlier, like Jenkins wanted, the Grizzlies could have muscled a comeback in his absence and won the game. So, it was too little too late for the visiting team. And that might be the reason Jenkins was not pleased with the way the foul on Edey was handled by the officials. Do you agree with the head coach?
