Will adding LaVine or Ingram make the Kings true title contenders, or is it wishful thinking?

The Kings are going all in! Earlier this summer, they made one of the biggest trades of this off season by adding superstar DeMar DeRozan. But it looks like the hunt is not over for team owner Vivek Ranadive. In a surprising move earlier this week, they traded Jalen McDaniels and cleared millions in cap space, giving them the flexibility to add another star. And the Kings have used some of that amount to sign sharpshooter Doug McDermott. But with more money to spare, Ranadive might be eyeing a bigger fish.

As per veteran insider Mat Issa, the Kings are likely to make more moves following the recent McDermott signing. Their primary targets? Zach LaVine and Brandon Ingram. Yes, although the Kings’ roster is already stacked with multiple all-stars, Ranadive is seeking another superstar to boost their title aspirations. Moreover, LaVine and Ingram have been in trade rumors all summer, which makes them the perfect targets.

Brandon Ingram (BI) is entering the final year of his contract, set to earn $36 million this season. While the Pelicans have expressed their desire to keep him, they’ve been hesitant to meet his extension demands. Meanwhile, the Sacramento Kings have shown interest in a trade for the star forward since the offseason. However, despite being $5.8 million below the luxury tax threshold, acquiring Ingram would be difficult, as he’s reportedly seeking around $50 million annually for his next contract.

Unfortunately, trading for Zach LaVine presents a similar challenge. While the Chicago Bulls are actively exploring deals for him, LaVine still has over $138 million remaining on his contract over the next three years. This hefty financial commitment is one of the key reasons teams are hesitant to pursue him. Despite being a career 20.5 points-per-game scorer, his injury issues—missing most of last season—along with doubts about his playoff performance, have raised concerns about his long-term value.

Obviously, adding either of the two stars would require the Kings to give up significant assets. Therefore, Ranadivé needs to be very careful with the moves he makes going forward, as he currently has a solid roster.

Yes, Vivek is still actively pursuing more stars, but he has done a good job so far. With the DeRozan trade, he added a veteran, multi-time All-Star who is also one of the most clutch players in the league. This past season, DeRozan averaged 24 points and finished as the runner-up for the Clutch Player of the Year award. Moreover, he has been dominant in a Kings uniform, impressing in his preseason debut by scoring 15 points on perfect shooting. He has continued that form, scoring a combined 41 points in his next three appearances.

Meanwhile, Doug is also a great addition to the roster. Yes, he is not a star player like the Kings would have wanted, but he is still a solid off the bench player who can produce on both ends of the floor. And he even impressed Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle with his performance last season, “Another guy that runs, stretches the floor, and plays well within the defensive system.” Adding to that, he is also a career 41% shooter from deep range which makes him a huge offensive threat. And if he contributes in Sac Town the same way he did for the Pacers lasts season, the Kings will have a legitimate shot at coming out of the West. Do you agree?
