Even with Nikola Jokic having yet another MVP-caliber season, he can only do so much to help his team succeed. And the Nuggets seem to have realized it. That’s why they have reportedly begun looking for another star who can give them more firepower on offense. Their potential target? Zach LaVine. However, this pursuit might put Michael Porter Jr.’s future in jeopardy.
As per multiple league sources, recent Nuggets’ discussions have had a significant focus on LaVine. Of course, the Bulls have been desperate to part ways with the high flyer for quite some time. But his $138 million pending salary for the next three seasons has made it difficult to find potential suitors. Fortunately, the Nuggets have the capacity to make that move by trading MPJ’s $115 million remaining salary to acquire the two-time All-Star.
“If Denver wants to do anything consequential, its best option may be moving Michael Porter Jr. and his $35.9 million salary.” Bleacher Reports’ Grant Hughes remarked. LaVine is set to make nearly $7 million more than MPJ this season. That’s why the Nuggets would be required to give up additional assets apart from Porter to make room for LaVine’s salary amid their second-apron restrictions. Maybe they could add forward Zeke Nnaji and a pick swap to the trade package.

Yes, that would be a huge price to pay, especially with MPJ having a career year, averaging 18.5 points and over seven rebounds. Moreover, the Nuggets would lose an elite three-point shooter by trading him. However, that might be a risk they need to take to win the championship again.

Well, this is not the first time MPJ could be on the trade block. According to The Athletic’s June report, the Nuggets were interested in acquiring Paul George, before he signed with the Sixers. Had they moved ahead with the pursuit, the trade package to the Clippers would have likely included Porter and Nnaji.
So, it is clear that the team has been looking to add a versatile wing for a long time and are likely willing to part ways with MPJ in the process.
Although adding LaVine is a risky move considering his constant injury concerns, he could prove to be a pivotal piece if things go right. Amid the trade buzz, he is having a solid season so far, averaging 21.7 points and over four assists. Moreover, he has the ability to create his own shots, which will take some load off Jamal Murray’s shoulders. As great a shooter as MPJ is, he requires the primary ball handlers to create open shots for him. That, however, is not the case with LaVine.
