Can Isaiah Thomas still make an impact in the NBA, or are his best days behind him?

Isaiah Thomas finally gets a nod after a series of disappointing seasons. The veteran point guard hasn’t had a proper season and consistent run with a team since 2017, as he hopped around 9 franchises after a three-year stint with the Boston Celtics. Now, the 2x NBA All-Star has an opportunity to return to the franchise, where it all began, the Sacramento Kings, as per the latest trade rumor.

In the last season, the Phoenix Suns signed him for a 10-day contract on March 20 to play the remainder of their season. Usually, the league allows a franchise to sign up a player for two 10-day contracts, and after that; they have to either sign him or he becomes a free agent. Last season, the 35-year-old played 6 games, averaging a mere 1.3 points in 3.2 minutes, after which Mat Ishbia and Co. once again pushed Thomas into free agency.

Fast forward to now, the veteran point guard may have another chance, this time at Sac Town. Sean Cunningham of Fox40 reported, “Fan favorite Isaiah Thomas will be among a few free agents in Sacramento this week for some competitive workouts with Kings roster players, who are in town. Sources say Tony Bradley, Juan Toscano-Anderson & Lonnie Walker are joining the group.”

Despite the challenges, Isaiah Thomas has continued to prove his ‘fan favorite’ tag. The Boston fans gave him two back-to-back All-Star appearances during his heyday for good reason. Notably, he averaged just under 30 points in the 2016-17 season, finishing 5th in the MVP ladder! However, after that season, the 5 ‘9 guard’s journey of certainty began but he remained in fan demand.

Interestingly, during his most recent 6-game stint with the Suns, coach Frank Vogel barely deployed Isaiah Thomas into the play, as he averaged only 3.2 minutes. At that time, the Valley fans could be heard chanting, “We want IT… We want IT,” as he warmed the bench. Nevertheless, if the Kings’ workout turns out well, the fan may witness their favorite point guard in action once again.

Will Isaiah Thomas return to the Sacramento Kings?

In 2011, the Kings made use of their 6oth pick and selected Isaiah Thomas. The 5 ‘9 guard stuck with the side for three seasons and ended the stint with an impressive 20.3-point average in the third year. The NBA is a game for big men and it’s quite hard for the short stars to survive unless they possess extraordinary shooting skills or play-making ability. Steph Curry‘s name came to mind, didn’t it? Unfortunately, IT, who has both in his arsenal, hit a roadblock after he sustained a hip injury during the 2017 playoffs.

Following that, it hasn’t been easy for the guard. Nevertheless, the question is, will the Kings rope him in as a backup guard? Notably, the team recently signed Jordan McLaughlin as a backup, and if the team is looking for another one in the same position, it may as well focus on size, defense, and shooting abilities, which, unfortunately, Thomas cannot collaboratively offer.

On the other hand, Lonnie Walker, who is also on the list of players for the workouts, can offer the above-mentioned abilities. Moreover, the shooting guard is also just 25. There are high chances for Lonnie to walk away with the offer unless Isaiah Thomas has something extraordinary to offer.

Last month, however, IT also clarified, “I want to play a year or two more.” So, do you think IT will make a short-term return to the Kings? Let us know in the comments below.
