Following the close win over the Rockets, Coach Taylor Jenkins addressed the press. The 40-year-old Grizzlies coach maintained a calm demeanor, patiently responding to the reporters’ questions. However, a few moments ago, there was a huge contrast in his behavior. After all, he’s a human being. In fact, I would say, it was a justifiable outburst. A blunder error from the ref at the end could have affected the Grizzlies’ efforts.
With 13 seconds remaining on the clock and trailing the Rockets by 1 point, Grizzlies’ Jaylen Wells collected a defensive rebound, engaged in a fast break, and scored a quick bucket. Except it wasn’t counted, as the ref called time-out before even he reached the paint. Guess what? Taylor Jenkins didn’t even call for it. In the replay, the Memphis coach can be seen showing gestures to his men to continue with the fast break.
It was a major screw-up. If not rightfully, Taylor Jenkins exploded in the heat of the moment. The ref’s hands were tied, he couldn’t blow the whistle, considering, it was 100% his fault. Jenkins got away without a tech or an ejection. Fortunately, it didn’t impact the result of the game, as the Grizzlies went on to win it with a 119-120 margin.

Speaking of the situation, at the presser, like I said earlier, Jenkins was an entirely different person. “We’ll see what the two-minute report or if the league says anything. So, that was my intention. Was not to call a time-out. I said ‘go go go’ and I wasn’t even signaling a timeout.” Now that Jenkins made his case, he has to wait for the league to drop its verdict on the issue. Importantly, it will determine the price that Jenkins may have to pay for his outburst.
Fortunately, the pool report came out in his favor, as the ref agreed to his mistake and ruled it as an ‘inadvertent whistle’. Hopefully, the league moves on with Jenkins’ questionable anger.
Taylor Jenkins and his outbursts
This isn’t the first time when Jenkins lost his cool on the court. At the same time, he has a history of accusing the refs of biased officiating in the past as well. Notably, during the Grizzlies‘ visit to San Francisco to take on the Warriors, the team had a similar situation. Rookie Zach Edey and Draymond Green engaged in a tussle where the Dubs star was clearly holding on to Edey’s leg.

The refs moved past the situation without a review while they reviewed Green taking an elbow blow. Jenkins expressed his frustration on the court and also took it to the presser. Speaking of the situation, he said, “There was that one play, we were about to start the break and he’s been playing really hard to try to outlet, and Draymond grabs his leg and pulls him down and it doesn’t get reviewed… So I know there’s a code in this league, and I don’t understand how that wasn’t reviewed. Very disappointing.”
At that time, the league didn’t take any action against the coach. But they usually slap a fine on coaches who critique the officiating. So, Jenkins may as well get away with this situation.
