Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem hung his boots in the last season after a history-rich career. As a present to his contributions to the franchise on the court, the team fought their way into the Finals last season. However, months after the Finals loss, Heat’s star center Bam Adebayo took it out on the legend with a friendly banter, as he opened up about UD’s ‘F**k Bill Russell’ speech, which took the Heat players by surprise.

Udonis ended his 20-season-long career last year on a high, as the team lifted his #40 jersey up to the rafters on his last game. He retired even before the team qualified for the playoffs. And, the eight seeding team went on to decimate the Eastern conference and fell short at the Finals. However, he kept himself involved in the team in a different capacity. Let’s find out more about in detail.

Featuring in the latest episode of The OGs podcast alongside Udonis Haslem and Mile Miller, Bam Adebayo revealed UD’s intense speech in a team huddle ahead of a game against the Boston Celtics. He continued to narrate the story where UD left everyone in shock with his surprise attack on the Celtics legend, Bill Russell. Hilariously, just before Adebayo opened up about the speech, Haslem said, “Man, you are going to get me canceled.”

Bam added, “At that time, we was home, they retired Bill Russell jersey for everyone in the league… This man going off… F**k Bill Russell too… Man caught a stray.. 6-feet under man”

In his defense, Haslem said, “I love Bill, but will you ever see a Miami Heat jersey hanging in Boston rafters ever?” Moreover, he didn’t stop there. He went on to take a dig at the Lakers legend, Jerry West. He jokingly argued that West wouldn’t be in the rafters if he played for the Heat.

While it was common to witness a franchise retire a jersey number to honor the player for their contribution to the team, Bill Russell had a different story. The late Celtics legend became the first person to have his jersey numbers retired across franchises.

It also exempted the rule for the players who held the #6 jersey for the 2022-23 season which helped LeBron James to don the #6 jersey for one last time to honor the legend. Along with it, the league made every player wear #6 patch on their jersey for the entire season.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, in his statement, said, “Bill Russell’s unparalleled success on the court and pioneering civil rights activism deserve to be honored in a unique and historic way,” reported CBS News.
