It’s not a rare occurrence for basketball players to talk trash while they are in the midst of a heated game. While some of it is often thrown just to distract their opponents, the rest of it seems to come out naturally in a moment of celebration while marking an achievement/feat. A similar incident recently occurred during the Golden State Warriors’ last matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, which involved star players Klay Thompson and CJ McCollum. While fans may not have known what was spoken earlier, their doubts have been cleared now.
During the game, Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins attempted to shoot the ball through the hoop from a distance. As soon as he jumped up to make the shot, McCollum grabbed his jersey from the sides, causing the ball to slip. McCollum was quick to react as he reportedly shouted “Post up again, ni**a” to his rival. The Pelicans’ shooting guard continued to trash-talk the Warriors even when he was on the sidelines.
While it brought a smile onto Stephen Curry’s face, it caused Klay Thompson to react back. Replying to McCollum’s retort, the four-time NBA champion could be heard saying “I’ve been busting your a** for years. For 10 mo*********ng years”.

Klay Thompson’s words had a bit of fact attached to it. In their 24 clashes ever since becoming a part of the NBA, the Warriors star has managed to secure a 17-7 win record against his rival. The record gets even better with their playoff clashes, in which Thompson leads McCollum by a record of 12-1!

The Pelicans’ shooting guard averaged 18.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists during these matchups, while the 5x NBA All-Star dropped 22.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. On April 12, McCollum may have had his moment to shine at the end of the matchup, as the Pelicans ended up defeating the Warriors by a score of 114-109. However, when considering their overall records, the 32-year-old is barely close to reaching the same threshold as Thompson.
Klay Thompson referred to his heated exchange as “basketball banter”
In the aftermath of the Pelicans clash, Klay Thompson was seen engaging in a presser with several media members. While discussing what went wrong during the game, the question was raised about what was going on between the player and CJ McCollum, since the cameras captured the moment well. Thompson, however, felt that their heated exchange was not anything that needed to be taken seriously.

“It was like two NBA players talking, probably not the best words were used,” said Thompson. “But that’s just what it was like, just good old basketball banter”.
With both the Warriors and the Pelicans qualified for the Play-In Tournament, Thompson and McCollum could get the chance to once again face off against each other this season. In fact, it might be an identical repeat as Steve Kerr emphasized the importance of rotating his squad considering the cramping of games in the postseason. Only time will tell whether that do-or-die clash will also include some trash talk or not.
