Following the incredible showcase at the All-Star Weekend, Victor Wembanyama was all set for the second half of the season. But fate had other plans. In a shocking update, the Spurs announced that the French Sensation is expected to miss the rest of the season. The reason? Deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. And turns out, Wemby had been showing signs of the issue over the past week!

As per veteran reporter Sam Amick, Wemby has experienced low energy in recent days. Even during the All-Star Weekend and the two-day vacation after it, the Spurs star did not show any signs of recovery. That’s when the team ran tests and he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis. Despite the shocking update, Spurs remain confident that Wemby will recover completely and make a comeback at the start of next season. As expected, the news of his season-ending injury has left his teammates heartbroken.

Chris Paul revealed that the team learned about Wemby’s health condition from team officials at a meeting before the shootaround. Of course, the Spurs have a game against the Suns tonight and they were preparing for it when they found out about Wemby. Ahead of the diagnosis, he was listed as doubtful for tonight with an illness. But the situation turned out to be far worse. Reacting to the news, CP said, “It was tough more than anything, I think, for all of us, knowing how much he means to the game and how much he loves to play.”

To shine more light on Wemby’s health, deep vein thrombosis occurs when there is a blood clot in one of the deep veins. While the condition usually occurs in a person’s lower body, Victor’s case is rare, as his shoulder is the body part affected. As per the Mayo Clinic, it can cause “pain, warmth and tenderness” in the affected area. Obviously, the bigger concern is the clot traveling to a more vital body part. However, Spurs are optimistic that will not happen with Vic. But it does put an end to his incredible season.

Victor Wembanyama misses out on DPOY Award and Potential Playoff spot after season ending diagnosis

Until the tragic update, Wemby was having an incredible season, averaging 24.3 points and a league high 3.8 blocks. Sure enough, he even got his first All-Star nod. But an even bigger award was likely on the cards, as he was a heavy favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year. However, that will no longer happen as his season comes to an end. Despite his impressive numbers, Wemby is ineligible to win the award because of the league’s 65-game criteria. He has only played 46 games so far.

Moreover, the Spurs’ season is also in jeopardy without their best player. As of now, they are ranked twelfth in the West and were hoping to make a playoff push in the second half. But it is unlikely to happen with Wembanyama out of the lineup. CP even acknowledged how much Wemby will be missed in his absence, “I talk about it all the time. He’s one of the best humans I’ve ever met, you know, in this league for a long time. So, I think for us, we just more than anything we’ll probably just miss him being around.” Maybe the San Antonio franchise should now shift their focus to developing their talent and preparing for next season when Wemby returns fully recovered and healthy from the vein thrombosis.
