Stephen A Smith can be a bit much sometimes. His over-the-top manner of criticism especially draws a lot of mixed reactions from fans. Some love it, some are sick of it. But you can’t deny that he is entertaining to watch and on occasions, he is absolutely spot-on. However, this time he and his crew almost had the wool pulled over their eyes when it came to New Orleans Pelicans star, Zion Williamson.

Earlier this week, a viral image floated around by a famous NBA parody account, added to Williamson’s woes. The infamous NBACentel image showed Zion pulling up to a Wendy’s drive-thru. The caption was even crazier making it seem like a real input: “REPORT: Zion Williamson was reportedly seen at Wendy’s drive-thru just minutes before team flight departure.” Mind you, the Pelicans suspended Zion for his tardiness, which had led to his team’s flight being delayed. Surprisingly, not the first time.

“I better not find out this has something to do with food!” Smith screamed at the camera, referencing the image. “I’m not joking,” he said in a more somber tone before repeating his previous statement angrily. Although the veteran did acknowledge that the image came from a parody account, he also made it clear, “But damn it. We can’t put nothing past when it comes to Zion Williamson!”

Stephen A. believes Zion wants out of New Orleans, implying that he is checked out mentally. “He is stealing money! I say that not to question the legitimacy of his injury. I’m saying that to question his professionalism you can’t you can’t have this kind of stuff happen!… Zion doesn’t wanna be in New Orleans,” exclaimed Smith before comparing Zion to another troubled talent, Ja Morant.

His co-host Shannon Sharpe also blasted Zion for his professionalism or lack thereof. Once he concluded his critique, Smith reiterated his sentiment, saying, “I better not find out it’s food. I mean, I’m being nice.” The host’s reaction simply goes to show how grave a situation Zion Williamson now finds himself in.

As things continue to unravel between the Pelicans and their star, a cloud of uncertainty looms over his future in New Orleans. With the biggest voices questioning his commitment to the team, rumors of him departing the Pelicans gain more credence with each day.

A season with only cameos from main man, Zion Williamson has seen the Pelicans slip to bottom of the Western Conference. Only appearing for 8 games this season and now getting internally suspended, things have gone from bad to worse for both parties. As the trade deadline rapidly approaches, the Pelicans, once hopeful about making their talisman stick, finally have a decision to make. Should they cut their losses and move on from the Zion Williamson experiment or keep their faith in him?

Well, if they do pick the former option, there is a potential suitor for Zion Williamson’s signature. Steve Kerr’s Golden State Warriors have been busy in this trade window. They already acquired Dennis Schroder from the Brooklyn Nets this winter. And they certainly would have the assets to convince the Pelicans to part with their mercurial forward.

However, if Andscape’s Marc J. Spears is to be believed, then it seems this trade won’t happen anytime soon. Spears reported that Zion is not on the Warriors’ radar right now. But as Stephen Curry looks to make a final push toward another NBA championship, this situation will be one to monitor as the deadline approaches.

It seems Zion and the Pelicans remain stuck with each other for the time being. Maybe they can sort out their problems with time and make it work. They’ve done so, to this day amidst widespread fanbase criticism. But they’ll need to do it quickly this time, as playoff season comes at us in the spring, in no time.
