Months Into $400 Million Crisis, Phoenix to Salvage Arizona’s Economy via NBA All-Star Game 2027

The NBA All-Star Weekend is returning to Phoenix. The NBA announced earlier today that Phoenix has been selected to host the 2027 NBA All-Star Weekend. That will be the 4th time in history the city of Phoenix will host the star-studded event. They did it earlier in 1975, 1995, and 2009. That is great news, as the event will help boost the economy of Phoenix and even salvage their $400 million crisis.

According to a 2023 analysis by the Joint Legislative Committee, the state of Arizona faced a $400 million budget shortfall at the end of last year. Two major reasons cited for the crisis were declining income and sales tax collections. However, the NBA’s latest announcement is projected to solve that issue. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs claims the 2027 All-Star Weekend in Phoenix is estimated to have a $400 million economic impact on the city.

The NBA All-Star Weekend has historically proven to be great for the host city’s economy because of the incoming tourism and star power associated with the event. Just this year, the 2024 All-Star Weekend reportedly surpassed the projected $320 million economic impact for the host city of Indianapolis. “We expect, given how the weekend went and the number of people we saw around downtown, participating in events and activation, that number could be even higher when all is said and done,” Danny Lopez, from Pacers Sports & Entertainment said.

Suns’ majority owner, Mat Ishbia, was excited after Adam Silver announced Phoenix as the host city for 2027. “Phoenix is the ultimate basketball destination, and we are excited for fans from around the world to experience our amazing city.” Ishbia said during a conference on Thursday.

Now that Phoenix has been selected as the host of the 2027 NBA All-Star Weekend, they would want to go into the event as Champions. The Suns fans have waited their entire lives to call themselves NBA Champions and have high expectations for Kevin Durant and Co. this year. The Suns Big 3 of Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker can lead the Suns to their first Championship if they stay healthy for the remainder of the season.
