The 2023 MLB season took an unexpected turn. While the narrative has always been that spending more money on the roster will translate to more wins, that certainly has not been the case this season. Despite high expectations from teams with a star-studded lineup and high-priced roster, it is the underdogs who have been stealing the limelight.

In a shocking turn of events, franchises spending less than the league average have surpassed the biggest spenders in the league. The underdogs Baltimore Orioles made an epic turnaround from 110 losses last year to 100 wins this season, on just a $71 million budget. On the other hand, despite spending $151,211,191 more than Stephen Curry‘s Warriors, the New York Mets still had a substandard season.

With the biggest team payroll of approximately $343 million, the Mets entered the season as favorites. However, the team had another disheartening exit. They will miss the postseason after a 10-inning, 5-4 upset to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets were eliminated from the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

With the new additions of reigning AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander and Japanese right-hander Kodai Senga, the Mets were projected to be potential contenders this season. However, the team took a major hit due to injuries to All-Star closer, Edwin D?az and Quintana. The Mets sort of gave up midway through the season and traded away the likes of Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Tommy Pham, Mark Canha, and David Robertson. If the team wants to make a significant comeback next season, they need to engineer some big trades.

Can the Warriors win the 2024 NBA Championship?

Interestingly, the Warriors faced a similar fate during the 2022-23 season. The defending champions had the second-highest team budget entering the season. However, James-led Lakers swept the Dubs in the Western Conference semifinals, eliminating them from title contention. The Warriors added crucial pieces to the team this offseason. The shocking trade of Jordan Poole for Chris Paul sent waves through the Dubsnation. They have retained their 2022 championship core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins. Although they have a very guard-heavy roster, they lack depth at the center.

This offseason the Warriors have addressed the issues that prevented them from clinching the title last season. They have added two reliable veteran point guards, Chris Paul and Cory Joseph. This ensures they have better playmakers on the floor who can initiate offense. The 2021 7th overall draft pick Jonathan Kuminga has also shown a lot of potential this offseason, dropping 60 points at the Crawsover Pro-Am. Therefore, fans are anticipating watching his exceptional basketball abilities on the NBA stage. With such a fortified roster, the Warriors are equipped to make another run to the finals.
