Is Mindy Kaling's DNC remark on Jayson Tatum a sign of Hollywood's disconnect with sports fans?

Jayson Tatum’s popularity, for good or bad, has not fallen for the last couple of months. First, it was the MVP debate at the NBA Finals, and then his performance from the Olympics caught the row, and now a public call. At first, it was Bob Cousy who emerged as one of the biggest supporters of Tatum after the Paris Olympics. However, skipping the sports domain, a silver-screen star gave a shout-out to her on-court icon from the Democratic National Convention in a political domain.

Producer and actress Mindy Kaling, while addressing the primetime segment of the Democratic National Convention, gave a shout-out to Jayson Tatum, saying,  “I love you, Massachusetts. Everyone is always hating on us, but they just don’t get it. Go [Boston Red] Sox! Go, Jayson Tatum!” Mindy said on the mic with huge cheering from the audience. From the looks of it, it seemed that Mindy was probably supporting the Celtics star despite his DNP status in the Semi-Finals.

But Mindy did not stop on a single audacious shoutout. She continued, “Ben Affleck, hang in there!” Apparently, she passed on her words of encouragement one day after Jennifer Lopez filed for a divorce with Ben Affleck. It is worth noting that the Oscar-winning Affleck and JLo have been married for the past two years. As per the court records, Lopez pulled the plug on April 26, months before her second wedding anniversary. Whatever it was going with Affleck and JLo, it seems fans did not like Mindy bulging in to support the 52-year-old and Jayson Tatum‘s name in a political gathering.

Fans go rampant over Mindy Kaling’s Jayson Tatum and Ben Affleck shoutout at DNC!

One of the fans on X user could not fathom that, in excitement, Mindy called out Jayson Tatum from such a coveted platform. As she commented on Mindy’s remark, Leave Tatum out of this. 😮‍💨” The sports-politics mix is influential when it is used to cross the cultural barriers and affect positively. However, giving remarks on a controversial take through a political platform might not be the best option.

Another X user called out Mindy for being unprofessional as he commented, I love her but that was tacky. I can’t believe she did that. So unnecessary 😒” Apparently, Kaling called out all names at the end of her speech to address her home city, Massachusetts, and everything related to it. However, as per the aforementioned point, it was unnecessary at such a prestigious gathering.

Is Mindy Kaling's DNC remark on Jayson Tatum a sign of Hollywood's disconnect with sports fans?

Have an interesting take?

One of the users did not consider Mindy worthy of hosting, as he penned after quoting her remark, “SOMEBODY TAKE THE MIC FROM MINDY KALING!” It may seem like she tried to connect with the people taking her fellow native Ben Affleck’s name. And then the addition of Jayson Tatum made it relatable to the Celtics fans. It even got a great response from the fans as well. However, it had nothing to do with the Democratic National Convention’s purpose. The sole purpose of that convention was to nominate the names for the post of President and Vice-President of the United States. Yet Mindy tried to make it humorous.

Either way, the fans might not be completely wrong for calling out Mindy Kaling’s remark. Going through it all, what are your thoughts on the situation? Let us know in the comments.
