Giannis Antetokounmpo has singlehandedly made the Milwaukee Bucks perennial title contenders. Giannis was picked 15th in the 2013 NBA draft by the Bucks and has played for the same franchise ever since. Considering how his career has turned out, Milwaukee was lucky no other team realized Giannis? potential during the draft, and he fell to the 15th spot. The Greek Freak led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA title, ending their 50-year championship drought.

Giannis has been loyal to the city of Milwaukee for the first 10 years of his career. But weeks before his eligibility for a $173 million contract extension, Giannis has his doubts about staying in Milwaukee.

In an interview with the New York Times, Giannis talked about his plans on and off the court. Giannis signed a 5-year $228 million Supermax contract extension with the Bucks in 2020, solidifying his position as the franchise leader. Three years and one NBA title later, Giannis will be eligible to sign another massive 3-year $173 million extension next month. If he chooses to sign the extension, he will be a Buck for at least the next 5 years. But Giannis seems hesitant to commit to the franchise just yet.

In the interview, Giannis addressed his concerns regarding the contract extension. ?I would not be the best version of myself if I don?t know that everybody?s on the same page, everybody?s going for a championship… And if I don?t feel that, I?m not signing.? Antetokounmpo said. He hinted that he might not re-sign with the Bucks if winning a championship does not remain a priority and they choose to start the rebuilding process instead. Giannis is 10 years into his career and does not want to spend 20 years on the same team and not win another championship.

Giannis is also looking at the extension from a business perspective

The 2-time MVP also talked about his inclination towards building multiple sources of income. Apart from a career choice, he is also looking at his contract extension from a financial aspect. ?Numbers-wise it doesn?t make sense.? Giannis said about signing his contract extension next month. He thinks, even if he does re-sign with Milwaukee, it will be next summer as that will be a more profitable decision for the 7-time All-Star.

The Milwaukee Bucks were title contenders last season but suffered a devastating loss in the first round of the playoffs against the Miami Heat. Part of the reason was Giannis? injury, but with Jimmy Butler?s historic playoff run, there is no surety that the Bucks would have gone past the Heat even with a fully healthy Giannis. After an early playoff exit, the Bucks fired former Coach of The Year Mike Budenholzer, who coached Giannis for 5 seasons and helped him win a championship.

Even though Giannis will always remain loyal to the city of Milwaukee, he has not made up his mind about staying with the Bucks because of all the uncertainties. Giannis has only one goal in mind as a player, and that is lifting the Larry O?Brien trophy once again. Do you think Giannis will remain a Milwaukee Bucks player for life?
