Coach Malone was born in Queens, New York City on September 15, 1971. Growing up, he was influenced by his father, the legendary coach Brendan Malone. The former NBA coach, 88, clinched two consecutive Larry O’Brien trophies in 1989 and 1990. Although Malone Sr. assisted Chuck Daly, he surely had some outstanding stories to tell young Michael back home. Getting to know how icons like Darryl Dawkins and John Long played must have tickled Coach Mike’s mind as a teenager. Well, little did Malone Sr. know, that his son would also take up his position and turn into a greater name in the league in the years to come. As you can understand without any trouble, Michael Malone is solely American by ethnicity.

He grew up in the neighborhoods of Astoria, Queens, and graduated high school from Bishop Hendricken, Rhode Island. However, young Mike had to Seton Hall Prep after his dad joined the New York Knicks coaching staff as an assistant coach. Years later, Michael Malone enrolled himself at Loyola University, Maryland, and became a part of the Loyola Greyhounds men’s basketball team from 1989 to 1993. Michael, now a young adult, appeared in around 107 games for his college team. He also started in 39 games as the point guard. During his four seasons with the Greyhounds, Malone totaled 370 points, 279 assists, and 79 steals in 18.5 minutes per game.

Kickstart to a coaching career

While studying at Loyola, Michael Malone was an assistant coach at Friends School of Baltimore. After graduating, he became an assistant coach for the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies under Greg Kampe. He almost joined the Michigan State Police but received a job offer from Providence College coach Pete Gillen. Malone served as an assistant coach for the Providence Friars from 1995 to 1998. In the 1998–99 season, he worked as the director of men’s basketball administration at the University of Virginia.

Meanwhile, Michael Malone gradually elevated from college basketball to the NBA. And in 2001, he took the assistant coach’s role with the Knicks just like his dad, Brendan Malone. Over the years, the 53-year-old assisted teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. In 2013, the Sacramento Kings promoted Malone to head coach, but his first stint didn’t go well. Two seasons later, the Denver Nuggets became Michael Malone’s home. And 9 seasons, two NBA All-Star Game head coach awards, 300 games, and a championship later, Coach Mike has put himself on the pedestal with the elites.

Besides, in January 2020, Malone joined the Serbian national team coaching staff as a consultant for Olympic Qualifying games. Now, taking a quick look at the 2024/25 season, Michael Malone stands on shaky grounds. This is because the Denver Nuggets lost the first two games of the season. However, the silver lining is that Jamal Murray and Co. successfully defeated the Toronto Raptors in Scotiabank Arena on Monday. Therefore there’s more to come before a judgement is made for the coach and his team.
