Rookie shoe deals have always had immense significance. Whether it be with a 3rd pick in the 1984 NBA Draft or a rookie deemed as “The Chosen One” in 2003, these deals have cemented their place in history. When the generational talent, Victor Wembanyama signed his shoe deal with Nike, things were no different.

Michael Jordan and LeBron James signed two of the most pivotal rookie shoe deals in history with Nike. Kobe Bryant, however late in the game, also signed a significant contract to have his signature shoe line with the brand. However, when Victor Wembanyama followed their footsteps and signed with Nike, he made a fascinating choice.

Victor Wembanyama chose a different route

Basketball athletes are faced with a tough decision when they sign with Nike. The decision of which shoe line they should opt for. With Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Michael Jordan’s legendary “Air Jordans” signature shoe lines being pioneer designs in their own right, it is always a difficult dilemma that the players face. Wembanyama however, chose a completely different route.

In his first ever game with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Summer League, Wembanyama laced up the Nike Air Zoom GT Run. An interesting choice, considering the options that were available.

However, this is not the first time Wembanyama has laced up the Nike Air Zoom GT Run in a game. He signed a multi-year sneaker deal with Nike while playing professional basketball in France and has worn the GT Runs ever since.

7’5 Wemby wears a custom size 20.5 and is expected to wear the same shoes through his rookie season as well. The Frenchman made a bold decision to wear this shoe but will the shoe serve the No.1 Draft pick well?

Wembanyama’s shoe is no joke

The Nike Air Zoom GT Run is the second shoe in the Greater Than series. The Air Zoom GT Run features a more robust React midsole and a wavy pattern. The cushioning system is stacked with two Air Zoom units. It also consists of two layers of Nike React foam. The shoe brings the cushioning closer to the foot through its Zoom Air Strobel construction.

The shoe was designed for players that can do it all on the court like Wembanyama. The shoe offers incredible ankle support and stability, which is essential for front court players. Focused to increase speed and facilitate spacing, it pairs perfectly with Wembanyama’s playing style.

Despite the Kobe, Lebron and Jordan shoe lines being pioneers, the Nike Air Zoom GT Run is an ideal match for the No.1 pick, Wembanyama. The only thing to see is whether the shoe determines the long run of the Frenchman whose advent has already fueled up the offseason.
