Tyler Herro is a player who has massively improved this season; he has significantly upped his defense game, and what we’re seeing is an aggressive Tyler who doesn’t hesitate to take shots from anywhere on the floor. The former All-Rookie Team star has been averaging 24.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in the 11 games he has played so far. This is a player who improves everyone around him.

Moreover, compared to his lean physicality in his rookie year, Tyler seems to have bulked up significantly thanks to all the work he put in the gym. Heat Insider, Ira Winderman, is more than impressed with Herro’s upgrade and can now breathe a sigh of relief over his retainment in Miami.

Winderman is grateful

Seeing the unmistakable improvement that Tyler has shown, Winderman is more than grateful to Micky Arison for keeping Tyler Herro in the team despite various trade rumors that included Tyler. He breaks down the possibility of a trade that could’ve let go of Tyler. As the song goes, “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone?” Hmm, Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, and a few middling draft picks . . . or Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and the possibility of a better pick pool from the Heat?

While the Heat’s offer, which included Tyler, was a good deal, the Trail Blazers‘ GM Joe Cronin never responded, so the Heat could never get a full idea of what was on the table for them. “Joe Cronin wouldn’t take the Heat’s calls. So the Trail Blazers general manager never truly could give Blazers ownership an accurate picture of what might be available,” Winderman says. Despite this, we have to take into account the impact that would’ve had on the Heat if Damian Lillard was traded in.

Damian Lillard slipped out of the Heat’s hands

After being loyal to the Blazers ever since his draft in 2012, Lillard was traded to the Bucks just before the season rolled around. Over the years, his relationship with the Blazers went sour, and he did not hide his desire to be traded to the Heat. Then, his trade rumors snowballed from there on. However, the Heat could not level up to the Blazers’ negotiations.

Missing out on Damian Lillard could potentially be a huge mistake on the Heat’s part. At the same time, not letting Tyler walk out worked out better for the team. Winderman points out, “And that’s the thing about trades and trade rumors. Sometimes you wind up singing a different song about maximizing the payoff for the Damian Lillard trade from the Blazers.”
