Gilbert Arenas almost got everything wrong with his latest rant. Team USA shocked everyone back at home when they almost lost to South Sudan in the exhibition game. Thanks to LeBron James for the game-winning layup. Following the close win, it sparked outrage in the hoops community criticizing the US side. However, on the other hand, Arenas, in an attempt to question the home side, made controversial xenophobic comments and also took an ugly dig at Joel Embiid.
In the latest episode of No Chill Gill, the former player said, “We got the males almost lost to some Africans… and the king (LeBron) had to save us. I know that LeBron haters are mad. We almost lost to the Ahi Ahi tribe. This is crazy.” He didn’t leave at that, he even accused Joel Embiid of siding with South Sudan, saying, “Man, Embiid over there goddamn throwing the game because he’s throwing the game for his cousins and sh*t.”
In response, Embiid, who wasn’t entirely aware of the rant, called out Arenas. He bluntly said, “I’m Cameroonian… if it was that negative, it’s just disappointing because you see what African basketball has done for us to be in this position to be able to make some sort of impact,” after the narrow win against Germany.

Following this unfortunate development, media veterans Rob Parker and Martin Weiss thrashed Gilbert Arenas and pointed out the crucial misinformation in his rant. But before that, Parker called him out for Xenophobic remarks. He said, “There’s no place for this. This is what happens when rich guys have nothing better to do, so they get a podcast and people follow them and they get on and they think that they’re so cute and funny and they can just chastise they don’t have to answer anybody. There’s no parent company so they just say whatever they want they do a disservice to the people.”

What’s the misinformation in Gilbert Arenas’ remark?
While the Fox Sports radio hosts called out the former Washington Wizards player for belittling the South Sudanese players, Martin Weiss picked out a blatant misinformation. During the rant, Arenas stereotyped the South Sudanese team for not having proper accessibility to practice.
Arenas shamelessly added, “They get their shoes from America. We gotta ship them shoes. They only have basketball rims, dawg. Manute Bol, I seen he had to walk… what, an hour and a half to go shoot basketball. We lose it to people who don’t even… they got baskets in the back. They shooting on f**king peach baskets in the dirt, no shoes.”

Addressing the statement, Weiss said, “It’s also factually incorrect like it’s also not true… If he was actually truthful about it and then you could talk about the delivery and how he was bringing, it’s just not true, so it’s like not only are you going up there and flatly lying you’re not even doing it funny.”
Notably, the league has set up an Academy in Africa to scout talent. The up-and-coming 17-year-old Khaman Maluach, who played for South Sudan, is a product of the program. Nevertheless, what do you make of the problematic remark? Let us know in the comments below.
