JJ Redick, the former NBA sharpshooter turned media personality, is eyeing one of the most volatile positions in basketball. Following their early postseason exit versus the Nuggets, the Lakers fired its entire coaching staff. And for the Lakers fans, this was nothing new. In the last few years, each season has come with major changes in the roster and the coaching staff. This time, the party in question is particularly the coaching staff. Interestingly, JJ Redick’s interest in applying for a head coaching job and the vacancy in the Lakers sideline clashed quite recently.

Combined with the fact that Redick and LeBron started their podcast “Mind the Game” just before the playoffs, Redick seems to be a suitable candidate by many. On the other hand, there are people close to him who are concerned about his next step. Of course, being a former player and one of the greatest shooters in the game, Redick is quite familiar with the modern-day ball. However, with all things considered, the real question arises around James’ time with the franchise.

This will probably be LeBron’s last year in LA. The same depends on quite a few factors including Bronny’s draft situation. “But J.J.’s got to hear from their franchise, from Rob Pelinka what their intentions are. How do they see life after LeBron James? How are they going to spend with these aprons in this new environment? What are their plans for their roster in this offseason? What can they do to help increase from their seventh place finish?”, said Brian Windhorst.

It will be a challenge for sure especially after LeBron, knowing how young the rest of the roster is along with the future changes to be made. Redick is set to appear for the interview for the same position this weekend. UConn’s head coach, Dan Hurley, was previously the key candidate for the job. However, the longtime college basketball head coach rejected the Lakers’ offer. There is no doubt that JJ will be one of the top candidates for the job. However, what matters is Redick’s future down the same road.

Is it too early for JJ Redick to consider this opportunity?

Right after his retirement, JJ started a podcast which gained a significant amount of attention. Along with that, Redick was also slowly becoming a part of the ESPN analyst team. Fast forward to two years, Redick is now in the ESPN A-team while also joining in as a primary commentator in the 2024 NBA Finals. He did show his desire to one day become a head coach, but it does seem a bit early for someone who is still young off his retirement.

He will be a candidate in the future even if he doesn’t end up as the Lakers head coach by the end of the summer. Redick can expect to get calls from teams knowing there will be much bigger opportunities down the road. From a fan’s perspective, watching Redick on the sideline while James directs the offense will be a spectacle to watch. The Lakers will not be fully inclined toward one candidate. This decision of theirs will be crucial regardless of James’ availability following the upcoming season.

It will be interesting to see how the Lakers look to evaluate Redick as a candidate. The final name under the head coaching position can be expected from the front office by the end of the Finals. What are your thoughts on Redick’s future as a head coach? Let us know in the comments.
