In moments where one side is angry, the other side must try their best to calm the situation. And to do the least, not fuel, then anger further! However, the Dallas Mavericks higher-ups seem to hit the absolute incorrect spot every time. After trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, the Dallas community has been looking for answers. But no one from the front office has given a clear reason for why they did what they did. And now, the franchise owner Patrick Dumont yet again missed the spot and triggered fans’ wrath.
Talking about the Doncic trade, the billionaire recently shared: “In my mind the way teams win is by focus, by having the right character, by having the right culture, and by having the right dedication to work as hard as possible to create a championship-winning outcome.” He further added: “And if you’re not doing that, you’re going to lose.”
Now, a point to note here: Luka Doncic’s fierce dedication to the Dallas Mavericks and a stellar 2023-24 NBA season, helped the team reach the Finals 7 months ago. Moreover, if someone told you Luka wasn’t working hard enough, they are simply haters.

so he looked at the support he doesn’t deserve that was present yesterday in the arena for the players who are here, coupled that with the protests yesterday, and said hmm, they had a couple days off from us shitting on their hero, let me get my gas can pic.twitter.com/gfq4vJRQWY

Wait, Dumont continued with a stern tone: “If you look at the greats in the league, the people you and I grew up with,” he continues to name MJ, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq. “They worked really hard, every day. With a singular focus to win.” Dumont added: “And if you don’t have that, it doesn’t work. And if you don’t have that, you shouldn’t be part of the Dallas Mavericks.”
The owner further mentioned that he’s unwavering in his notions. This is how he works inside and outside basketball. “If you want to take a vacation, don’t do it with us.” But when pointed out that the fans are assuming that he’s inferring that Doncic wasn’t fit for the franchise. To this Dumont said: “I think there’s a lot of things that come into play when you decide the roster of the team. And, culture is very important.” The man surely doesn’t seem to be on the emotional side of this.
Wow! That was intense. Was this indicated at Luka? It must be because he is the star who was recently removed, right? Besides, the franchise reported that the star’s body weight and conditioning had concerned the team. An alleged 270 pounds! Believed to be one of the reasons why the team pushed Doncic out. It doesn’t make much sense, to be honest. And well, you cannot truly blame the Mavs fans now that they’re furious once again!
Mavs fans spew out their discontent over Patrick Dumont’s alleged Luka Doncic stance
One of the fans commented on X: “The trade happened and it’s over with. It’s his money, there was clearly stuff going on behind the scenes for a while. He made his decision and it is what it is. I don’t agree with it, but it’s not my money I’m spending.” For once, you have to agree this comment does make a lot of sense. Surely, it’s the franchise’s money that they invested in Luka Doncic and now they’re investing in AD. And despite the discontent and disagreement between the front office and the fans, the deal’s done. And no one can change it.
“It’s like they’re trying to make it harder to root for them every day,” someone wrote. Well, this is something Patrick Dumont and his team need to work on. Yes, Luka is gone, he’s a Laker now. But, for the front office, they do need to be cautious about their comments. Especially now with GM Nico Harrison reportedly receiving death threats, things are tricky in Dallas now.
Meanwhile, a fan dropped a GIF reaction:

A die-hard fan asked: “Every year the Mavs don’t win the championship they have to trade their star player now right?” Just to make it clear, the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA title in 2011, and that was their only championship. Since Luka Doncic joined the franchise in 2019, they have become a force to reckon with. In 2024, they made it to the finals, and despite losing to the unstoppable Boston Celtics, their gameplay was immaculate. Now, coming back to the fan’s question, it seems valid. Do you trade off star players every year because there’s no championship? No.

Lastly, another fan taunted, saying: “Dam shame that building was half full yesterday……” Beyond social media, protests reached the streets too. Although DPD managed to curb the noises, the fans held posters and placards supporting Luka Doncic, firing at Nico Harrison and Dumont. Therefore, the fact that the AAC was ‘half-full’ for the game on Saturday seems like an upsetting fact.
Therefore, the anger prevails. And Patrick Dumont’s stern notions aren’t helping in subsiding the frustration. Instead, it’s feeding the fan’s anger, triggering their hatred. However, the ultimate truth remains one, and one alone. And that is: Luka Doncic has been traded to the LA Lakers.
